TQAA, Compulsory Certified Trade
Description:
Sheet Metal Workers fabricate, assemble, install and repair sheet metal products. They shear, form, weld, solder, and assemble a host of items made from galvanized iron, sheetsteel, copper, nickel alloy, stainless steel, aluminum, plastics and ceramics. Sheet Metal Workers read engineering drawings and field sketches to fabricate items such as furnace and duct systems for homes and heating and ventilating systems for high-rise office towers.
Education, Training, Experience and Skills Required:
- Grade 10 education or ministry-approved equivalent (many employers recommend Grade 12)
- Completion of a four to five year apprenticeship program
- In Ontario, trade certification is mandatory to work in this trade
- Recommended high school courses include: English, mathematics, physics, manufacturing technology, design technology
How to get Trade Certification:
- Complete a four to five year apprenticeship program
- Pass the Certificate of Qualification exam to receive both a Certificate of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification with journeyperson status
- Smart move: get interprovincial (Red Seal) trade certification so you can work anywhere in Canada
Salary Expectations:
Range from $15 to $30 per hour
