Secondary School Students Excel at Provincial Skills Competition

They participated in 28 events ranging from 2D Character Animation to Cabinetmaking, facing off against regional gold medal winners from across the province.

Forty-four competitors from the Upper Grand DSB and Wellington Catholic DSB traveled to RIM Park in Waterloo on May 1st for the Ontario Technological Skills Competition.

A Brief Overview of the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program

The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, in partnership with provincial school boards, is transitioning to a new data collection system that will include all student participants in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) as well as those students who may be registered as Apprentices during their co-op placement. A Brief Overview of the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) is a secondary school Co-operative Education option for students interested in pursuing a career in the Skilled Trades.  OYAP provides students with an opportunity to earn credits toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma while acquiring skills and knowledge in their chosen trade.

OYAP is also able to provide the opportunity for selected students to complete their Level 1 Apprenticeship in selected Skilled Trades in partnership with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and Conestoga College.

For February 2013, packaged programs that combine apprenticeship training and co-operative education will be offered in: 

  • Automotive Service Technician
  • Brick and Stone Mason
  • Cook
  • General Machinist
  • Truck and Coach Mechanic
