Welcome to May! At Rockwood Centennial P.S., May means Education Week and our Arts Alive! Showcase and Open House. This year promises to be a spectacular display of student talent under the direction of Mrs. Barb Eley and many supportive teachers, parents, and students. This Arts Alive! will be bittersweet as it marks the final performance for Mrs. Eley before she heads into a well deserved retirement after 32 years of teaching (most of this time spent at Rockwood). Mrs. Eley’s influence on generations of children at Rockwood CPS is legendary. She will be truly missed. Please be sure to book your tickets to this gala performance early.

We have several staff changes at Rockwood this month. Mr. Pink has been promoted to Principal of Grand Valley and District Public School, effective May 1st. As a result, Mrs. Bibby has been promoted to Vice-principal and Mr. Heikki Jaason has been hired to be our new Resource teacher. Mrs. Gillian Siegwart has started her maternity leave, and Ms Mary Leach has been hired as her replacement in Grade Eight English. We wish Mrs. Siegwart and her husband Don all the very best at this exciting time in their lives. Congratulations to all! We hope to see everyone out at our many school events over the next few weeks. Please read our newsletter for details.

In our busy school we set goals and make plans for how we can improve students safety and learning, to enhance their school experience, and to help them grow to be better world citizens. As a community of teachers, parents, educational assistants, secretaries, custodians, and administrators, we are constantly seeking ways to work together to reach the bar we have set for ourselves in our motto, “Expect Excellence.” Most recently, a focus has been on hearing from the people we are here to support, the voices of our students.

Andy and I are often asked what makes Rockwood such a special school. We always mention the children who strive to do their best, the supportive families, and the hard-working faculty. This month especially, we are reminded that it is the community approach that really makes Rockwood a very big school , which in spite of its size, feels like a true small town school.

The UGDSB is conducting a study into the feasibility of establishing a French Immersion program in Rockwood. If you know a family with pre-school children in the Rockwood / Eramosa area who might be interested, let them know. The input from parents of children as young as 1 or 2 (at least 4 years of age on or before December 31, 2014) will be critical to the study's outcome. Find more infomation and take the survey online at: www.ugdsb.on.ca/fi-rockwood

Term 1 of 2012 is over and Report Cards are on their way home February 10. The Elementary Provincial Report Card is designed to ensure that all students in the public education system receive a standard report card based on the expectations of the Ontarion Curriculum. Communication about your children’s achievement is intended to encourage students to set further goals for their learning and to help parents/ guardians support learning at home. Please take time at home to review your child’s report card with him/her. Asking questions such as, “What learning are you most proud of this term?, “ and “What are your specific goals for improvement in mathematics? How can I help you at home?” will help to start a constructive conversation about the report card at home. Research tells us that it is a strong home and school connection that makes a significant positive impact on a child’s learning. Congratulations to all of our students on their hard work this term. We have seen improvements from every student.
