Water bottles

Students are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle for their use during the school day. This will allow us all to stay hydrated while minimizing trips to the water fountain during the instructional day!

Updates and items to note

- order forms for hot dog and grilled cheese days organized by parent council are being sent home in agendas on Thursday. Please note that orders for the next three months (October, November and December) are all due together, by October 7.

- unfortunately, we were unable to complete our trip to the public library today. We will try again on Tuesday, October 4.

- the October newsletter and calendar will be posted to the PPS website after the weekend. It will also be sent via email to all parents on my mailing list. It is not too late to send me your email address in your child's agenda! For this month, a paper copy will also be sent home in all other agendas on Monday.

Math Test

A reminder that our math test on number skills will take place on Thursday, September 29. It will cover topics like those on the review sheets sent in home folders a few weeks ago, including:

- writing the names of numbers to 10 000

- writing numbers to 10 000 in expanded form

- comparing (i.e. which is bigger?) and ordering (i.e. put in order from greatest to least) numbers to 10 000 and decimals

- rounding numbers (i.e. round to ten thousands, thousands and hundreds and decimals to whole and tenths)

- writing the names of decimals or the decimal if given its name

- counting bills and coins to determine a total money amount

A few upcoming dates:

-Our school Terry Fox Run takes place on Wednesday, September 28 in the afternoon. We are still accepting donations of a toonie as part of our "Toonies for Terry" campaign!

-Pizza orders are due by Wednesday, September 28 for anyone who wishes to order pizza for the whole year or for term 1.

-We have begun our weekly visits to the school library. Any books signed out should be returned each Day 3 (which falls on Thursdays for the next several weeks). Library days will be listed on the October calendar as well.

-Finally, I am looking forward to meeting (or seeing again!) anyone who is able to attend our Meet the Teacher evening tomorrow, Thursday, September 22, from 6:30 to 7:30

Toonies for Terry

Our class will be participating in the school Terry Fox Run on Wednesday, September 28. We will join the other primary and junior classes as we walk/run a course on the school grounds.

As a fundraiser for this worthy cause, the school is again running the "Toonies for Terry" campaign where all who are willing and able are encouraged to donate a toonie. As an extra incentive, the class that raises the most money (per capita) will receive an ice cream party!

Donations can be sent in your child's agenda. (Placing money in a bag or envelope labelled with your child's name is always helpful in keeping us organized!)

Thank you for your support!

Classroom community

With September reorganization complete, we welcomed five new members to our class this week, bringing our total up to 29. It has been wonderful to see our classroom community embrace what has become our guiding principle: TREAT OTHER PEOPLE THE WAY YOU WANT TO BE TREATED. Even with the challenge of interacting with so many others with different personalities, preferences and learning styles, students are working hard to honour our four classroom "agreements":

Attentive listening

Mutual respect

Appreciation/no put-downs

Active participation

We are well on our way to becoming a true learning community! Keep up the great work!

Welcome to Grade 5

Welcome to Grade 5 at Palmerston Public School!

With this blog up and running, I am trying to become more environmentally friendly and dramatically decrease the number of paper newsletters and updates sent home. Our classroom October calendar will be the last one printed and sent home in agendas. Watch for details of this to come in next month's newsletter.

Bookmark this blog or the P.P.S. website and check back often for important classroom information, reminders, changes and updates.

I'm looking forward to a fantastic year!
