Vow of Silence

Today our school participated in the Vow of Silence, where different grades were challenged not to talk for varying amounts of time. Grade 5s were challenged not to talk for at least 30 minutes. This initiative is meant to raise awareness for children who may not have a voice and are victims of things like child labour. I was so proud that the students in our class challenged themselves not to talk for the whole school day instead, which the grade 6 to 8 classes were also attempting. The students spent the day writing notes to communicate and exercising their dramatic skills, and except for a few little slips (and recess when we allowed for a needed break in the day), the vast majority of our classmates were successful in their Vow of Silence! By all accounts that I have heard, our class was one of the most successful in refraining from talk for the whole day. Well done Grade 5! I`m so proud of your committment!

The Touching Program

Later this upcoming week, our class will be completing again this year "The Touching Program". Over the course of several days, we will watch a movie and complete some discussions and activities that are meant to focus our attention on good and bad touches and how to handle unwanted touches, including bullying. Ask your child to share with you the content and learning from this program. If you have any questions about this program, I would be happy to try to answer them or I can put you in contact with our Child and Youth Worker, Mrs. Hope, for further information.

Check out UG2GO!

UG2GO is a great resource for students to access online at home. It provides access to videos, music, books that can be read online and databases for research purposes. Students are also able to link to Student Link through the UG2GO site. Student Link, which we use at school and should be familiar to students, is a compilation of other websites connected to all curriculum subjects, academic areas and areas of interest. Check out the huge wealth of information and resources it provides! Students should be aware of their UG2GO username and password as they are the same ones that we use to sign on to the computers at school. UG2GO can be accessed at https://www.ugdsb.on.ca/ug2go
