Essentials Programs

Grade 9 and 10 Essential level courses deliver regular high school curriculum with a focus on the practical knowledge and skills that students need to be well prepared for success in the work place. This path leads to grade 11 and 12 workplace level courses, and OSSD, and eventually to the workplace or an apprenticeship. It is possible for students to move from the Essential to the Applied stream, depending on the student’s abilities, needs, post secondary destination, and success in the Essential courses.

The inclusion of Learning Strategies (GLE 10J) allows students to practice the learning skills (eg time management, organization, study skills, test taking strategies) they will need to be successful in high school, and also provides increased literacy skill instruction. Many accommodations found on exceptional students’ IEP’s are built in to these classes, such as extra time, reduced written expectations, and smaller chunks of work.

Selection of the Essentials Program should be made in consultation with the student, parents/guardians, grade eight teachers, and Norwell staff. Students choosing the program must select the entire package of 7 courses at the grade 9 level and 6 courses at the grade ten level.
