It’s hard to believe that we have come to the final weeks of classes for the 2012-2013 school year. Reflecting back over the school year’s calendars, newsletters and photos, it has been a very busy, exciting and rewarding year. I would like to extend my appreciation to all of our volunteers, lunch hour supervisors, School Council and our dedicated staff for the support, encouragement, cooperation and assistance given to benefit all our students. I would also like to thank our students for their hard work, cooperation, and respectful behaviour all year long...READ ENTIRE JUNE 2013 NEWSLETTER (PDF).

As the weather turns more spring like, our thoughts turn toward the end of the year. However, before we get too far there are many activities planned and educational opportunities yet to be experienced. The last two months include EQAO, track & field, ultimate frisbee, special school visits, trips, School Council’s Ice Cream Social, report cards and Grade 8 graduation. We hope you will join your child in some of the many activities between now and the end of the year.

Open House!

Be sure to visit the school for our Education Week Open House. On Monday, May 6th, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the school will be open for you to visit your child’s classroom as well as the library for our Scholastic Book Fair. Also appearing will be the School Band. Be sure to stop in!

Grade 3 and Grade 6 EQAO

Grade 3 EQAO testing dates have been set for May 27th to May 31st, while the grade 6 students will be assessed from June 3rd to June 6th. It is expected that the assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics will take approximately two hours each day.

SMART START FOR EQAO:

  • avoid absences to the greatest extent possible
  • reschedule appointments
  • ensure your child gets lots of sleep
  • provide healthy food and snacks
  • eat a good breakfast
  • give hugs and pats on the back
  • be positive

March 2013 News

In only a few weeks the winter season will be in the rear view mirror and spring will be upon us. In advance of spring of course is the March Break, from March 11th to March 15th. Whether traveling during the holidays or enjoying a “staycation”, the entire staff of KHPS wishes our school community a safe, happy and healthy March Break.

I came across this article which a friend sent to me a few years ago. As you know being a parent is both a wonderful yet challenging experience. I found that each time I read these “wishes” one or two strike home. Read them at your leisure; perhaps put them on the fridge - it is fascinating to learn what children wish their parents would understand.

Twelve Things Real Kids Say They Wish Their Parents Would Do!

  1. Please make me work for my allowance and special privileges but give me a break to do the fun stuff I really love.
  2. Watch for a while before correcting me - maybe I will self-correct and then be sure to tell me about the growth you see in me.
  3. Correct and give me praise in private - it’s embarrassing when you do it in front of others.
  4. Encourage me to try new things and remind me that mistakes are part of learning.
  5. Tell me what you like about me and then give me a chance to do things on my own.
  6. Share your excitement about the world with me.
  7. You could always apologize and say you’re sorry when you mess up.
  8. Help me be organized with my belongings and school work.
  9. Let me know that you understand and acknowledge my feelings.
  10. Spend some time with me doing my kind of fun stuff.
  11. Treat me as if I were your best friend’s child.
  12. Even though I am a kid, include me in the choices about the things that impact me.

In the journey of being a parent, it’s important to stop along the way to reflect about parenting skills and how important it is to remember that you are your child’s first teacher!
