The Spring weather is finally here and it looks like it is going to stay! We have had a busy month in April with Earth week, Earthkeepers, visioning for our new King George playground and visits from the Ministers to see music in action!

Our yard is starting to look more beautiful now that we have had a spring clean up. Our playground assembly with Dennis was well received by staff and students. We are looking forward to planning some great activities for the new King George playground. Parents shared great ideas at the visioning meeting on Apr 30.

We are also looking forward to raising funds for our new playground. If you are able to donate items for our Silent Auction at the Fun Fair on Thurs. June 13th please send in the items to the office labeled King George Auction. A letter is attached to the newsletter with information that can be sent out to companies and/or contacts that you may know to request items. We hope to raise funds through the Auction to support our new playground!

Name the new Laurine Avenue School

 Permanent link

Dear Parents and Students:
We hope you have been watching the progress of the new school currently being built. We are excited that it will be ready for students this coming September 2013! At this time, the new school does not have a name. We would like to give you the opportunity to participate in naming the school. You never know - it may be your suggestion that is used!

The process for naming a school is as follows:

  • Suggestions can be made by filling out a printed copy of the PDF form at the bottom of this post and placing it in a ballot box located in the lobbies of Tytler PS, King George PS and Ottawa Crescent PS, or submitted online.
  • A "New School Naming Committee" comprised of parents, principal, trustee and superintendent of education has been established at the Board level. This committee will consider all submissions and forward its recommendation to the Board. Final approval will be given at an official Board meeting and announced to the community.

According to Board Policy 303, a school can be named in the following ways:

  • According to the street name on which the school is located.
  • According to the community the school serves.
  • After a significant individual or after a significant event. (A significant individual or event shall have had a notable impact on education or the quality of life throughout or beyond Dufferin and/or Wellington Counties).

We hope that everyone enjoyed the Easter weekend with family and the Easter bunny! Let’s hope that Spring weather will soon be here to stay.

We are very excited to announce that we will be doing some playground visioning with the help of a playground specialist to look at how to improve our playground area. A special thank you to the Greening and Grounds committee and School Council for supporting the purchase of sports equipment at recess for each class.

Thanks for all of the penny donations. We have raised approximately $500 in pennies!! You can continue to help support our playground fundraising efforts by bringing in money and responding to surveys to help us plan effectively for our yard. We will be asking students, staff and parents for their ideas to help make our playground a great space to play and learn. Thank you to all students, staff and the community that have assisted us with our fundraising efforts.

A reminder that April 22nd is a PD day and there will be no school for students that day. Staff will be engaged in a variety of workshops focusing on school improvement and student achievement in Math and Literacy.

There has been a lot of exciting things happening at King George from Kindergarten Carnivale to Hockey Day at King George which has been exciting! After March Break things will really start to get busy at King George. EQAO testing for the grade 3s and 6s is coming up at the end of May and we are preparing for Grade 8 graduation at the end of June, plus many exciting things along the way. We are currently in the middle of the second term at King George and we encourage you to chat with your children about the goals they have for success during the second half of the school year. Ask them how they are currently working towards meeting those goals and what help they may need to find success. Have a safe and relaxing March Break!
