What's New

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please take a moment to read through our June 2010 newsletter. Below are some important items to note.

Dr. Eva Olsson visits GVDPS

For over a decade, Eva Olsson has spoken to over 1 million people in schools, service clubs, and churches, on armed forces bases, at police conferences at Queen’s Park, and the United Nations. Increasingly, the focus of her message is bullying and the importance of not being a bystander to injustice. She uses her life experiences, primarily in the Holocaust, to illustrate the power of hate and the importance of standing up to the forces of racism, bigotry and intolerance.

Dr. Olsson will be here on Monday, June 21st, 2010 to speak to the junior and intermediate students.

Important Dates:

Report Cards Home -- Friday, June 25th, 2010
Grade 8 Graduation -- Monday, June 28th, 2010
Year End Assembly -- Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

In Term 3, students in Grades 3 and 6 will be participating in the Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics, Primary Division (Grades 1–3) and Junior Division (Grades 4–6). The Assessment will take place on the following dates:

  • Grade 3: May 31st, June 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th and 9th
  • Grade 6: May 31st, June 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 8th

Students will complete the assessment during the first block of the instructional day. More information will be coming home from the Grade 3 and 6 teachers as we move closer to the date.

Milk Bags

Families are asked to continue to collect milk bags and bring them into the school. The bags are used to make mats that provide the impoverished with something to sleep on other than the bare ground and provides something durable and dry. Our goal is collect 7,000 milk bags and we are currently less than 1,000 bags from our goal. Thank you to Mrs. Sevenco for her continued efforts with this worthwhile project.

JK/SK Registration

If you have a child who was born in 2006 and would like to register him or her in JK, or a child who was born in 2005 and is age appropriate for Kindergarten, please come into the office and pick up a registration package. Students currently in JK will automatically be registered for Senior Kindergarten. We ask that parents who know of families who do not currently have children attending GVDPS, but who will be attending in September 2010, to please contact those families about registration. A reminder to all JK/SK parents that GVDPS will have full day learning beginning in September 2010.
