Linda finishes 4th at International Brain Bee!
Linda and students from Australia, Grenada, India, Italy, New Zealand, South Korea, and the United States competed in the International Brain Bee in San Diego. All of the students were truly amazingly bright and such nice people! The competition was very close and Linda finished in 4th place! The girl from India won, the girl from New Zealand was second and the student from the U.S. was third. There were two boys in the competition, from Italy and Grenada.
Linda will be in the Health Sciences program at McMaster in the fall. |
Centennial gives out its major Awards
Centennial's top achieving students were awarded Centennial's major awards in early June. Leslie received our top award. Leslie was a very busy student over the four years and was very deserving winner of Centennial's top award. Her commitment to the environment and student involvement was remarkable. Our next major award went to Sofia. She won the Principal's award, which is a very prestigious award. Sofia was an excellent student and devoted a lot of her time to school activities. Our finally major award winner was Maddie for community involvement. Maddie gave a lot her time to the school and the community over her 4 years at Centennial. Congratulations to all award the winners! |
Athletics acknowledges its top athletes!
In early June, Centennial's top athletes were recognized for the outstanding efforts. Many MVP and other awards were given to our athletes. Centennial has eight major awards. The senior female athlete of the year went to Alexis and the top senior male athlete was given to Brandon. Our top Junior athletes were Helena and Edward. Four other awards are given to recognize our students' commitment to Spartan athletics. Noor won the W.C Scott award for school spirit and dedication to athletics. Alexis won the P.D Robinson award for the excellence in athletics and academics. Darren won the R. Valentinuzzi for his volunteering efforts. Finally, Peter was the winner of the first ever Mike Elrick award. He received this distinction for demonstrating the values that Mr. Elrick instilled in his players.

Spartans demonstrates their strong acamdemic abilities at Science olympics
48 Spartan Scientists competed against 700 students from 25 schools in 20 events. Here are the results:
1st Place - Compound Boggle Frank, Kefei, Julia, Jason, and Linda
1st Place - Displacement Dragster - Syed, Alex, Peter, Aaron, Aayushya
1st Place - Taxonomy Spelling Bee - Ian, Peter, Pavania, Marcus, Shuang , Alex
2nd Place - Fermi Questions - Frank , Kefei, Julia, Jason, Gyamfi
3rd Place - Robotics Event - Quentin, Cody, Gyamfi, Tornike
Grade 9 Pentathlon Team earned two 2nds and one 3rd - Eric, Cristina, Caleb, Peter, Tina, Alex, Chris, Diane, Meghan, Toluwa, Isobel |
Reach team finishes 6th in Province
Centennial's top reach team competed at the Provincial championship last week. The team of Dan, Kefei, Ben, Cooper, and Ian finished 6th among many schools at the provincial level. It was a very long weekend of the team, as the championship had many rounds. It is great accomplishment to place that high. As well, they were one of the youngest teams to be competing at the championships. Great work guys! |
Centennial Hosts city wide chess tournament
On Wednesday, May 12th, the annual Centennial Cup Chess Tournament, took place at Centennial. Thirty-two students from 4 area high schools participated in a great day of competition, officiated by local chess guru Hal Bond. In the Junior Category (grade 9 and 10), Centennial swept the podium, with the Gold medal going to Nicholas, Silver to James and Bronze to Marcell. In the Senior Category (grade 11 and 12), the Gold went to Spencer of Centennial, Silver to Mark of Our Lady of Lourdes and Bronze went to Suchintan of Centennial. The overall school title went to Centennial, who won the cup for the 7th time in the eight years the tournament has been taking place. Bishop MacDonnell and St. James tied for second place.
Congratulations to all who participated on a great day of chess.

Spartans have unbelievable showing at DECA Internationals
28 students traveled to Kentucky for a week to compete in DECA internationals. Helena and Mitch had a great week by finishing 3rd. Which is a phenomenal accomplishment. Bryce, Pavania, and Jasdeep were also very successful by finishing in the top 20. In all 28 students qualified for Internationals. They include: Katherine, Madeline, Bryce, Aedan, Mitch, Toby, Daniel, Dylan, Becky, Ellen, Hayley, Leslie, Ashah, Kaitlyn, Jasmine, Zakiah, Jennifer, Jenna, Linda, Nadia, Shveta, Pavania, Jasdeep, Sandra, Helena, Jananie, and Diana. Another great year for DECA!

Caroline is Awarded Top Prize!
On Wednesday night the school hosted the Hot Jazz/Cool Art evening. It was a chance for our school's artist to showcase their many talents. It was amazing collection of art pieces. All grades were on display and the diversity of our students work was spectacular. The piece of art that was awarded top prize is pictured above. It was piece created by Caroline. On top of the art, our musical talents were on display once again. The audience was delighted to a variety of music and the crowd enjoyed every performance.

Centennial Hosts 60 Teams over two days
On Thursday and Friday, Centennial hosted their annual rugby tournament. The weather was cold on Thursday and wet on Friday, but the athletes played through the bad weather and enjoyed a great tournament. We would like to thank our sponsor Kukri for supporting our tournament once again. As well, all of the hard work given by our volunteers for the tournament. It wouldn't have run without you!

Environment week a very green week!
The Spartans finished another great Environment week. It started off with a great assembly that taught the students about the effects that they are having on the environment. The school continued their focus throughout the week by rewarding students who walked or biked to school, as well those students who brought a litterless lunch. They continued to sell canteens to support the use of reusable container for water. Finally on Friday, the Spartans "switched it off". Focusing on reducing the amount of lights and computers that don't need to be on in the school. Remember everyone can make a difference and every little change has an effect. |

A great demonstration of Spartan talent!
What an incredible showcase of talent from our School to Community Work Transition Program who performed at the “Our Stars†Talent Showcase.  An engaging rap song, a guitar solo, dances that were high energy and entertaining and a wonderful skit called the Bird Song were all performed in the first ANNUAL  show. Special thanks to Ms. Sue Knox who organized and scripted this show. Staff were overjoyed with "Our Stars" amid last minute jitters and excitement.  The audience was amazed and responded with lots of  enthusiastic clapping and cheers.   Everyone is looking forward to next year’s talent showcase of "Our Stars".

Anti-bullying week a success!
Bullying is area that every school struggles with and Centennial did its part to stop it happening here. Through out the week, our community tried get the message to the students and staff that bullying effects many students and they need to everything they can to stop it. Poems, stories, and trivia were done throughout the week help to the education process. A see of pink was also created by the school. On the Wednesday, many staff and students wore pink to support the cause. It was great to see so many people supporting such an important cause. |

Great effort again at Science Fair!
Centennial Students had another wonderful year at the Waterloo-Wellington Science and Engineering Fair.
Sophia, Noorain, Jenny, Leslie B, Jessica and Linda all won Gold Medals in Senior Biotech. Matt won a Gold Medal in Intermediate Biotech.
Bobby won an Honourable Mention in Intermediate Life Science. Hillary, Susie , Justin and Andrew won Gold Medals in Senior Engineering. Alexis and Naythrah won Silver Medals in Senior Life Science. Susie and Hillary also won an Energy Prize.
Sophia, Noorain, Jenny and Leslie won Awards of Merit and will go on to compete in the Canada-wide Science in Peterborough in May. Congratulations to everyone. The science dept. is very proud of all of you. |

Great work by students at Skills Canada!
Last week was a very busy week for students participating in various Regional Skills Canada Competitions. We had a total 20 students compete in 12 different events. This is quite an accomplishment, and makes Centennial one of the most active schools in the board. Many of these were first time events for Centennial and we are very proud of their results.Â

CCVI wins ECOO competition!
The senior programming team of David, James, Suchintan and Andrew placed 1st in the District’s ECOO Team Programming Contest. On Thursday, April 1, they competed against 12 other teams from Upper Grand and earned 360 points to grab the top spot. Centennial’s Junior team placed 5th overall and the Wildcard team came in 4th. Two of Centennial’s teams will advance to the Regional competition at UWO. Congratulations to everyone for a great job! |

Linda is the Brain Bee Champion!
For the 5th year in a row a Centennial student has won a local brain bee.
Linda won the U. of G. brain bee today and will advance to the National Brain Bee at McMaster University at the end of May.
Thomas finished in second place and a student from Norwell finished in third place. Julia made it to the elimination round. Centennial had competition from Norwell, Centre Wellington and Lourdes. |
Reach For The Top wins again!
Centennial's Reach For The Top Teams competed at City Championships on Tuesday. All of Centennial's teams did an excellent job showing off their knowledge of many facts about the world and its history. The team of Daniel, Kefei, Cooper, Ian, and Ben should be especially proud of their work as they beat CWDHS in the final. The team will be heading to the Provincial championships in May. Congratulations on a job well done! |
Mock Trial team loses in Semi finals
Centennial's Mock Trial team on Friday, competed at the regional competition in Brantford. Going in with a belief that the team could win the competition, they got off to a great start winning their 1st round match up. It was a great performance by all members. In the semi's, they face the defending provincial finalists. The team stepped up their game and did an unbelievable job, having their best trial yet. Unfortunately the judge didn't see the same thing and the team ended up losing. They should be commended on a great effort! |

Improv has fabulous performance at Regionals.
On March 6th, Centennial's two improv teams competed at the regional competition. The gold team performed early in the day, in the wild card. A great group students put on amazing display of talent. Unfortunately, the team just missed out on making the regional final and ended up 6th overall in competition. In the final, our purple team gave it everything they had and they dazzled the judges and audience with their skills. After their many performances throughout the evening, the team just came up short and finished 2nd overall. Unbelievable work by both teams! |

CCVI WINS DOUGLAS CUP!
On February 27th, two Centennial teams competed at the City Mock Trial Competition. Both teams qualified for the final, after they both won their semi-final match up. In the final, both teams battled hard and tried to outwit the other side. In a close battle between a veteran group of students and group of up and coming lawyers and witnesses, our veteran team narrowly won. Both teams should be commended on their hard work and dedication and are looking forward to the regional's. |

On February 25th, Centennial hosted its first ever Science Olympics. Along with Centennial, GCVI and Bishop Mac participated in the event. It was a great event, in which many students were able to enjoy the world of science. Centennial's teams finished 1st place in all of three of the events, which included Science Jeopardy, Chemistry Scramble, and the Engineering Challenge. This group of students will be participating in many other events over the next couple of months. |

On February. 23, twenty-eight bright computer programmers participated in the University of Waterloo's annual Canadian Computing Competition. The unofficial results are impressive. Adam was our top Senior student with a score of 31 and Quentin shattered Centennial's previous Junior record with a phenomenal score of 71 out of 75. Congratulations to all! |
On February 8 and 9, many Centennial students participated in the Provincial competition in Toronto. Many students were successful at the event and a total of 28 students qualified for the International competition in Kentucky, during the month of April. Great work by a group of dedicated students! |
EVENT FOR HAITI
Our school community came together on February 5th, to support the relief effort for Haiti. It was an excellent evening of entertainment, that the crowd thoroughly enjoyed. The group of students who organized the event should be proud of their effort and thanks to all who supported the cause. |

SPARTANS HOST V-BALL TOURNEY
The Spartans hosted another great tournament on February 5th. It was an excellent tournament, with a number of great teams. Our Spartans made to the semi-finals, but came up short against Bishop Mac. In the final, Norwell defeated BM. |

AKERSTREAM RETIRES
The Spartans community had one its teachers retire at the end of semester 1. Mrs. Akerstream was absolutely dedicated to her job and really wanted her students to succeed. She will be truly missed in the Special Education department and we wish her best of luck in her retirement. |

The Music Knights played a wonderful performance this year. Playing several pieces, the audience was captivated by the both the instrumentals and vocals alike. Centennial takes pride in our Music Knights and we congratulate them for their fantastic performance. |

MILK MILE
The Milk Mile is a competition that takes place during the Terry Fox run. Students have to chug milk and run while trying to avoid getting sick. The activity brought its usual antics and
comical moments to remember.

ACOUSTIC JAM
During the fall, a variety of guitar players signed up for the Acoustic Jam. There were many talented musicians accompanied by gifted singers as these students played their own original works as well as covers by bands such as All Time Low.

FESTIVE ASSEMBLY
The Spartans were delighted to another excellent festive assembly on the last day of class before the break. It was a great mixture of comedy, music, drama, and dance. It was another great example of the true talents of the Spartans and how diverse the student population is.Â

TERRY FOX RUN
From the milk mile to the hundreds of Centennial students participating, this year's Terry Fox Walk turned out to be a success. Centennial did another great job raising money for Cancer research. |
