We are happy to announce that every student in grade 1 has now been set up with their very own Raz-Kids online reading account!!!! This collection of leveled stories and reading comprehension questions is completely online and can be accessed anywhere there is access to the internet. Each student can login and have access to their account which contains stories at their current reading level. Students will have access to Raz-Kids at school but they will also be able to access it on their own time when not at school! We are training students how to use the program over the next few weeks before the holidays but a letter will be coming home soon to explain Raz-Kids more and provide you with your child's login and password information. If you have any questions please write a note or give me a call at the school. Enjoy the online reading!

Hi everyone!

First off we would like to wish everyone a happy holidays! Time is flying by in our classrooms and it has been awesome to see every student continue their learning and having fun along the way. Please read the following points about what is happening in our classrooms and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call us at the school.

Homework Calendars – December is a very busy month, both in the classroom and at home. For this reason, there will be no homework calendar for the month of December (it will resume in January). Please use the time you do have to read together and to look around your house to find real world math problems (see below for suggestions).

Home Reading books – We have been working really hard on our reading skills for the last 4 months and every student has advanced in their reading ability. To ensure that each student is working at a level that best supports their current needs, we will be completing leveled reading assessments one-on-one with each student to help us place them in new groups January 9th. There will not be any leveled home reading books sent home starting next week until after the break to allow for proper organization of each group. Please continue to read with your child and remember that we are not only working on decoding and reading the words, but also on retelling the story, identifying the characters and setting and making connections. Also, please return any home reading bags and books to the classroom on Friday.

Many families have asked for some ideas of things to do with their child over the holidays to encourage continued numeracy and literacy skills. Here are a few ideas. First and foremost please remember that your child has worked hard and deserves the break to have fun and be a kid, so please make that a priority!

Literacy

Continue to read together each and everyday, with a focus on comprehension and understanding. Remember that while there is a great excitement in allowing your new young reader to read to you, it is also important for your child to continue to hear stories read to them. Reading aloud to your child provides important exposure to vocabulary and complex language structures, which books at their independent reading level don’t.

If you don’t already have a Puslinch library membership consider taking one out over the holidays. Allowing your child to regularly choose their own books and be responsible for knowing where they are kept and when they are due back helps to develop organization and independence.

Allow your child to write thank-you notes to family and friends who have visited or given gifts during the holiday. Your child may be comfortable writing the whole letter independently. If not you can share the writing experience by writing words dictated by your child, and allowing them to fill in words they know how to spell.

Continue to practice basic sight word recognition. Read them, hunt for them and write them!

Numeracy

Play games together to help your child develop confidence and familiarity with numbers. Many popular card games and board games involve recognizing numbers, counting spaces and other number related logic. Enjoy games night as a family!

A great game to play home is called ‘Make 10.’ Make 10 is a variation of Go Fish. Instead of trying to get a pair, you need to get two (or three) cards which when combined make ten (e.g. 6 and 4 makes 10, 5 and 5 makes 10 or and extension would be 6 and 3 and 1 makes 10). Your child should be familiar with the rules of the game and can explain it to you and your family. You will need a deck of cards (Aces represent one, Jacks, Queen’s and Kings are removed from the deck) to play the game.

Make everyday problem solving a part of your holiday routine. We use math, problem solving and logic on a daily basis, and including your child in this experience will help them gain confidence and mastery of this skill. Focus on the same skills that your child has seen regularly in class activities (e.g. What is the total? How many are there? How can we figure out which is the longest? What is the core of the pattern here? How can we sort these items?).

Learning about money is an everyday activity in grade one. Allowing your child to help you sort, count and roll coins to deposit at the bank is an educational activity you can do at home. This is a great hands-on learning skill and can involve counting by 1’s, 5’s, 10’s and 25’s.

Important Dates

Thursday Dec. 15 – Pizza Orders Due

Friday Dec. 16th – Holiday Craft Extravaganza!

Monday Dec. 19th to Thursday Dec. 22nd – Food Bank Drive (please bring in non-perishables)

Wednesday Dec .21st – Primary Holiday Talent Show

Thursday Dec. 22nd – Colour Day Carol Sing

Friday Dec. 23rd – 1A & 1B Holiday PARTY!

Monday Jan. 9th – First day back at school

Have a happy and safe holiday season with your friends and family!

Read the project over with your family and see if you can come up with your ideas. Don't forget I can take pictures here at the school if you bring them in or make them here at school. Also if you take a digital picture at home of a fraction and want to send it to me in an email (chad.guyitt@ugdsb.on.ca) please do that as well.
The Royal Winter Fair

The Royal Winter Fair was a really interesting trip. I would have gone to the dog show but there were too many people in line. Nevertheless I had a lot of fun. I saw the swine, cows, sheep, alpaca, llama and other stuff. When we were buying fudge I got really lucky because I had exactly 6.00 and the fudge was exactly 6.00.Then, all of a sudden, aliens from planet Sandboxian came down from the sky and stole our fudge and they started to leave in their flying saucer but this super hero guy that I saw in a movie once came down and there was a lot of chaos. Anyway, I learned a lot too.

1. If ever aliens from planet Sandboxian come down from the sky always run and scream.

2. A bean takes about 2-3 days to sprout.

3.Plastic containers are made of corn so it will form soil if put in the ground.

4. A grown cow weighs from 12,00-15,00 pounds.

So,those are all the things that happened to me at the Royal Winter Fair.

See you!

Just a quick note to say thank you to all the students and parents who came to the student led conferences last week in our class. The students did such a great job directing the conferences and overall it was a great success. Hopefully, you will continue to look at your goals throughout the year and if you are not finding that you are reaching them, sit down with your parents and look at what changes need to be made. Awesome job everyone!

GOOGLE EARTH

Lots of students were showing their parents the Google Earth program that we have on our computers at school. If you are interested, you can download the same program for free at home. Just click on this link http://www.google.com/earth/index.html and it will take you the home page for Google Earth. You can follow the easy download instructions from there to get this exciting program that really makes geography and mapping to a whole next level.

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the silence on the blog, there has been a lot going on around Room 8. We have been drying fish (ask your child if you haven't heard about our science experiments), making recreation viking and egyptian art and focusing on measuring area and volume of 3D shapes. Yesterday, we took a look at a web site that reinforced one aspect of 3D shapes. The site gives a 360 degree look at nets and the 3D shapes they make. Check it out at http://www.fi.uu.nl/toepassingen/00297/toepassing_wisweb.en.html and play with the different shapes to help you understand how they fold and unfold from 3D shape to net. Don't forget that there is a test on these concepts on Monday! The sheet that was sent home this weekend is a general overview of the skills and formulas that will be needed for the test. All the best and remember: If you KNOW it, SHOW it!!!!

WOW, I can't believe how fast time is moving. I hope that everyone had a great March Break and is ready for Term 3! There is a lot happening on our classroom as we are moving into new areas in all subject areas as well as getting ready for our annual DrumFest!

Here is an update on our various subjects:

Language Arts

We are continuing to work on our fluency and spelling skills. In writing we are focused on how we organize our ideas and paragraphs to get a clear and interesting narrative or article. In reading, our current topic is inferencing which combines clues from the story and personal connections to help us create an inference regarding the main idea or message of the story. We are practicing our inferencing skills through pictures and short stories to help us strengthen our abilities. Be sure to ask your child what we decided "The Wretched Stone" really was!

We are gearing up to take on individual novel studies for term 3 as well as writing biographies and autobiographies so students watch for more information!

Math

In math we are picking up where we left off in term 2 in Number Sense and Numeration with fraction skills. We are looking at where fractions are used in everyday life as well as developing the ability to determine the connection between fractions, percents and decimals.

Example: 3/4 is the same as 75% which is the same as 0.75

Also, with fractions we are looking at the difference between proper and improper fractions as well as why it is important to reduce fractions to their lowest terms.

Parents, I encourage having conversations with your child about where you encounter fractions in your daily life, from baking to the gas gauge fractions can be found everywhere!

Science and Social Studies

For science we are taking a look at flight (gr.6) and forces (gr.5).

Social studies will be a combination of Egyptian civilization (gr.5) and Early explorers to North America (gr.6). Stay tuned for more information about both of these units.

Music

This term we are gearing up for full participation in DrumFest which will be happening at the end of June this year. We are learning about percussion and rhythm and will be creating as a class the song we will perform on the big night! Active and proper participation is a key to success in this class so students are encouraged to always be prepared and focused when needed.

So that is a quick round up for Term 3 in room 8. Be sure to check the blog often as I promise to add more questions of the week and students will be adding more of their work to the blog to share with visitors.

I am really proud of everyone's accomplishments this year so far and I look forward to a great term 3!

Remember any questions please call, write a note or email me at the school!

Thanks again !

Mr.G

Fishbowl Question: I want to get this Term 3 message to as many students and parents as possible so if you have read this far, answer the following question and let me know the answer and you can hit the fish bowl!!

What famous book that was turned into a movie did author Chris Van Allsburg write?

A Roman villa

For our essay we will talk about an ancient Roman villa. There is alot of information about these so we will not tell all of it. We will you what it looked like on the inside, some interesting facts and give a brief history of the Romans. We hope you like it!

In 50 B.C. a great era began. The great era was the time of the Romans, who lived in Italy 2000 years ago even now they were called the Romans that did not stop them from expanding their empire. In A.d 117 they expanded their empire into Europe and even into Africa. They were the most civilized and civilizations back then. Their houses were amazing.

The Roman villa was made by putting up a wooden frame then putting concrete mixed with blocks of limestone. Then there is a thin layer of concrete followed by some polished stones and framing. The floor was made of colored glass and rock. The corners had bricks. A Roman villa looked like a cobblestone house of white concrete.

In the ancient Roman house there were all different names for different things, such as the culina or the triclininium. The triclinium was a dining room and a culina was a kitchen. An atrium was at the entrance of the house and it was kind of like a indoor pool followed by the peristylium, a great garden in with coulums this at the perimeter of it. The vestibulum was the entrance hall, and several cubucilums led off of it. Another and entrance enters into a tabernae or shop the shop sells pigs and ducks that were already prepared to be. There are 17 different rooms with hard to pronounce names.

We came across many interesting facts during our research. Some small gardens were in the middle of the villa. Wine

was stored underground. One thing we think was weird was that the Romans knew about soap but did not use it. Another thing we think that was weird was that they ate olives, honey and read for breakfast. Our final fact was that some rooms had heated floors.

Now that we have told you about the ancient Romans near Vail as what Novell is look like on the inside and why to the villas are made of. Now that you have a better understanding about the ancient Romans and their villas is we hope you enjoy our version of a Roman villa. We think that the Roman houses were very advanced for their times. The Romans were good inventors they made concrete, stones and a device which is very similar to running water.

Wigwams

Bryce, Kyle, Breanna, Angus and Elizabeth

Hey do you like native americans? The tribe we will be talking about is the mik’maq tribe and the wigwam house. The mik’maq tribe lived in the wigwams. The tribe is a very spiritual and use the environment around them to make many things like wigwams and food like deer.

The reason why they lived in wigwams was because they were very easy to take apart. It takes one day to build, and the materials can be moved to different locations and used again. The region witch they lived in was in Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and P.E.I. The resources they had within the region was salmon, sturgeon, whale, walrus, seal, squid, eel, lobster, mouse, caribou, beaver, porcupine, bear and smaller animals like squirrel. They also preserved food for the winter like berries and edible plants were gathered. Each community had a chief. The Mik’maq tribe lived in harmony. The saqamaw was the most respected person in the district. In each community there was 50-500 members. They all worked in a group together.

The wigwams were made of birch bark from the birch tree. They used caribou, moose and deer skin to make some of their walls. The wigwams were also made from wooden frames. Small wigwams were built as a territory/shelter by hunters who followed herds of animals. Larger wigwams were built to house families and were found in Cree villages. Some wigwams materials are saplings or young trees were cut down and secured into the ground. Other branches were attached horizontally to create a strong frame. To keep all the logs and poles together they tied ropes to make it stay.

The wigwams frames were used by trees called saplings and were 3 to 4.5 meters long. Wigwams contained items the Algonquin needed to survive. Smoke from the fire escaped out through a hole in the top of the wigwam. They laid mates around the fire so that they had a place to rest and sleep. They would cover them selves in animal fur to keep them warm. Baskets and shelf like structures were found throughout wigwams. Baskets were used to hold corn and berries and other foods and items. Plots and dishes were sat or hung from shelves.

Women built the wigwams out of logs poles to build the frame. The wigwam was tied together by rope and string. Another thing they stuck together was moss.

We have told you about the tribe and what region they which they live in. Also told you how the wigwam was made and the materials they used. You learned that there is a fire pit in the middle of the wigwam. You also learned that the women made the wigwam. We also showed you our model of the wigwam.

The Long House

Long houses are 18 to 67m. They can hold up to 100 or more people. They have 3 fire places and beds that are kind of like bunk beds. In the beds there was ever green tree leaves as bedding. They used animal skin to cover the bedding.

How to build a long house?

Iroquoians used birchbark and animal skin to build a long house. For the bedding they used cedar and on top they had animal skins. They made they fire places out of rocks. These are the materials that they would use.

What they ate?

They had 3 sisters. They were corn, beans, and squash. These three sisters were used for food, most cooking, and healing recipes. They would start planting in the summer and harvest in the spring. They ate fish and other meats as well.

What does it look like inside?

Inside the long house looks like an old cabin with 3 fire places and rows of bunk beds hand made on either side of the Long house. There are also holes in the roof for the fire places called “smoke holes”. They use animal skins for carpets around the beds.

Interesting Facts

We thought that these facts were interesting. The food corn and maize was known to be important food. The people were made up of 3 different groups. Those groups are: The Huron, The Petun, and The Neutral.

We found that the Long house and it’s people were very interesting. We talked about: How to build a Long house, what they ate, what does it look like inside, and some interesting facts. Thank you.

The Plank House By Ashley, Hope, Alex, Mark
Do you like living in the wild? If so a plank house is a place for you! It is some were to live and stay out of the wether. It will keep you warm in the winter and out of the snow.

In the tribe they followed the same thing year after year. In the religion of the Haida people, each part of the year brought celebration or festival for new gifts which the creator had sent them. In some places they still celebrate the same as the Haida tribe. They celebrated for social status.

The homes were built by getting birch bark , plank of red cedar wood, nails and another kinds of wood. They would nail them together. When it was done it would be in a rectangle shape. They would sew animal fur together and put it on the beds to make them more cosy. The materials used were birch bark, red cedar wood, nails many other kinds of wood, animal fur, skin and threads. There shelter changes depending on the season because in spring it rains a lot so the wood would rot.

In a plank house there are poles that were place a few cm apart, reinforced with bark slabs, then woven together with branches. There were watch tower, from witch sentries kept a look out. The palisades had only a single opening to make sneak attacks difficult. Villages had to be moved every 10 to 20 years because the soil become worn out from farming and supplies of wood got used up.

The plank house was only used by the Haida tribe .They were located from northen California all the way up to Alaska. The planks are made of cedar wood lashed to a wooden frame . The houses were permanent not like nomadic people’s houses.

We hope you like how our house was made. We took some time and effort to look up facts and what kind of tribe made the plank house. We hope you like our model of the plank house and essay.

SUPER JOB EVERYONE!

The Tipi
by John, Bryce, Abbey, Shaelyn Introduction

Hi, our group project was the Tipi. The First Nations built the Tipi and we will tell you interesting facts, the tribe, inside of the Tipi and the home.

Tribe

The First Nations people had many different homes they lived in. One was the Tipi and the tribes that lived in them were the Cheyenne, Sioux and the Arapho tribes. The Tipi was easy to build and take apart when the tribe needed to move.

Inside the Tipi

Inside of a Tipi there is a fire pit to keep them warm and paintings are normally about there ancestors and how they lived. They also have animal skins to keep warm and cozy. They have bows and arrows to hunt.

Homes

The Tipi was a home made out of wood and buffalo skins. In the middle of the Tipi was a fire place.

The Tipi small and quickly built sheltered Indian tribes who lived by hunting. Bark light to carry easy to build with was unrolled around the fire pit. Forests spreading across the Yukon to the Southwest to Virginia provided all the bark they needed.

Interesting facts

Did you know the earliest homes were very small averaging 14-16 feet tall. Did you know for an average sized home 16 feet their were 12 well tanned Buffalo hides needed to be obtained. Did you know the frame of the tipi was created by tying three poles together to make a tripod. Did you know four circular stars would be created by using died porcupine quills that would be sewn together. Did you know at night fires were lit inside the home and the fire made the skins grow. Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed our assignment on the tipi. We told you what is in the tipi, fire pit, painting, bows and arrows for hunting. You learned what tribes lived in the tipis the Cheyenne, Sioux and the Arapaho. We told you interesting facts the tipi was made by 3 logs to make a tripod. I hope you had fun learning about the tipi.

Igloos

By: Ellie, Danielle, Brody and Brittany
Hello, today we will be talking about igloos and the Inuit tribe who lives in them. Also we will tell you about the Inuit tribe’s homes, inside their shelter and interesting facts.

The Tribe

The Inuit tribe lives in igloos up in northern Canada. In igloos, the tribe first made the sleeping areas up higher, and they still are. An Inuit man can make an igloo in about an hour. It would take him longer if he cut a hole for fishing for a delicious home-cooked Inuit meal. The Inuits are smart and started the tradition of letting the walls melt and re-freeze to make another layer of ice.

How The Igloo Is Built

An igloo is made out of snow. When an igloo is built the snow that is used needs to be packed and strong enough so it can be cut and stacked without breaking. Most Inuits take out one to two blocks of snow to make a window. Most Inuits can make an igloo very easily. So no cold air enters the igloo a small tube and or tunnel is dug in the snow.

Inside An Igloo

Inside an igloo, it is -2 to 16 degrees celsius. There is a fishing hole sometimes inside an igloo for ice fishing. They hold equipment to hunt for food inside the igloo as well. Inuit’s make their beds up high in the igloo so if there is cold air that enters through the door way it will not reach them cause they were so high. Inside an igloo there is a fire pit to... you guess it, to keep warm and\or to cook their food.

Interesting facts

Igloos are very strong homes and can give shelter from very powerful gusts of wind. While constructing an igloo one person helps build on the inside while another works on the outside. This way, he/she can move the blocks to fill in the cracks between the snow. Every layer of this ice home was constructed with smaller sizes of snow blocks so that the shelter finally formed a circular dome shape at the submit. You’ve heard about the strength, size and shape of an igloo.

Conclusion

So as can see, igloos are very interesting. A lot of people wouldn’t think about all the interesting things about them. Nobody would ever guess how warm it was inside them or that the Inuits would make a fishing hole inside! Also, that they were made of snow and ice.

Thank you!

By: Julianna, Brayden, Steve and Emily

This is our essay about our Greek villa. We will talk about what our model looks like, a brief history on it, what the villa used to live in the house and also some beliefs and interesting facts. That is what we will be talking about.

In ancient Greece the villas looked a little like homes today. Only rich people lived in them. First of all they had an altar where they would pray at night. There was a slave’s bedroom and an owner’s bedroom. There was a kitchen with open fires where they would cook. The lady’s lounge was on the upstairs left where the lady’s were only allowed to go in to entertain. The men’s lounge was right below where only the men were allowed to go in. At the entrance there was a greeting/guard man there was a statue called Herman that would stand by the door. The last room was the washroom. That was some brief history on a Greek villa.

Houses were usually built around a central courtyard. There were many doors leading from the courtyard. The windows were small. The roof was made of pottery tiles. They would have wooden staircases leading to the upper level. The base was made of stone and the walls would be made of mud bricks. This is what the house in ancient times was made of.

In ancient Greece the courtyard was made of stone and ours is made of clay. The kitchen contained small fires for cooking and we used clay for the pit and twigs for the wood. We used tissue paper for beds and pillows. Our bathroom was made of mostly clay. That was what our model was made out of.

In ancient Greece there was food, customs, beliefs, recreation and transportation, and a lot more , but I am going to talk about the ones I have just mentioned. First of all ancient transportation was much different from what transportation is now.#1 they used carts and if you were rich you would ride on horseback or you would just walk. Recreation in Greece was very popular and had the first Olympics there. Woman were not allowed to participate in the olympics but the men were and 5 of their sports were the pentathlon, running, wrestling, jumping, discus and javelin throwing. All of these required great strength.

Greek beliefs and legends were of Zeus and his gods. According to the legend the lyre which is an instrument like a guitar that was invented by the god Hermes, he made from a tortoise shell and ox horns. Have you ever thought about what a Greek person’s life would be like? Well here is some of the things they did. In ancient Greece there were many festivals in praise of their gods but the purpose of them was to please the gods and persuade them to grant the peoples wishes. There wishes might be making crops grow or bringing victory in war. There isn’t just festivals, there are also athletic competitions or theatrical performances could be held either to have fun or empress a particular god. The last custom that Greek did was getting married. Marrige very important to carry the family heritage and besides women had no alternet other than getting married. Last but not least are facts that I have found during my research:

Did you know that birds, dogs, goats, tortoises and mice were all popular pets in ancient Greece? Or that women and children were not allowed to watch the Olmpics because the participants in the games did not wear clothes? Or did you know that the Greeks invented roof tiles? And the winners of the Olympics were all presented with palm branches, a wreath of olive leaves and wool ribbons? Or last in 395 AD, ancient Olympics ended by a terrible earthquake? Because I know I didn’t when I was reading it. Those were some beliefs that the Greeks had.

We have told you many interesting facts about Greek villas such as history, beliefs, how our model was built and the inside of our model. Greek history is great, like studying what things a Greek person/house had. We worked very hard on our project. That is what our essay was about.

Math

We are currently in the middle of a unit on Probability. Parents please ask you child about the language we have been using to describe the possibility of something happening. We are learning more about tree diagrams to help us understand and organize possible outcomes when doing theoretical probability. There will be a test for this unit next Friday (January 15th) so please encourage your student to review a little bit each night for the test.

Also don't forget Nelson has a great resource for students online that works with their textbook. Click on http://www.nelson.com/nelson/school/elementary/mathK8/math5/default.html for grade 5 and http://www.nelson.com/nelson/school/elementary/mathK8/math6/default.html for grade 6 practice.

Language Arts

The class is currently in the middle of novel studies that we started before the holidays. The themes of the novels are directly related to the social studies units that both grades are focusing on. The novel studies work like book clubs where the students are responsible to the rest of their group for completion of their assigned task and then sharing with the rest of the group in a conference.

Our focus this term for writing and reading is text features. We had identified various text features in writing for both narratives and reports and have been explaining how those features help us understand the text better. Ask your child what some "french fry" and "hamburger" features of a narrative are and why they are separated!

Also speeches are quickly approaching, watch our blog for more details!!

Social Studies

This term the grade 5s are learning about ancient civilizations and the grade 6s are focusing on the First Nations people of North America and especially looking at how people got to North America. Over the next few weeks both grades will be given their final assignments to help them demonstrate their learning.

Health

Both grades this term are looking at "choices". How we make them and how they effect us! The grade 5s will be learning about foods and the choices associated with them and the grade 6s are looking at the choices everyone has to make regarding friends, body image and "doing the right thing". I am sure this will open up lots of great discussion!

Math

- Friday is our concluding test on Measurement, both grades will need to show their skills at converting measurements and perimeter. Good luck and don't forget your rulers!

L.A.

- Ms. Beerda (our current Student Teacher) is doing a mini-unit on the Winter Olympics as we have begun to watch the torch relay and discuss the parts of Canada that it is currently traveling through.

Social Studies

The Grade 5's will be looking at ancient civilizations and the grade 6's will be studying the different social groups of early North America. These units will spill over into work that we will be doing in Language Arts when we start our next novel studies and writing assignments.

We split up into our groups and then went off. In my group there was Matt, Nick, Steve, Callum and I. We went to the animal section that had all cows, pigs, sheep and also roosters. After that, we went to the petting zoo which had goats, llamas, roosters and sheep. Next, we went to the food court where we each had some fudge and I got maple flavour. Then from there we wanted to have lunch early because of the line-ups. I had a caesar salad and a sandwich. After that we went to souvenir shops and got some hats and candy. I got a giant lollipop. Finally our school went back to the front and then we went home. That was my day at the Royal Winter Fair.
Brayden

We are moving on to the next unit in math: MEASUREMENT!

As some of you may know by now, 5/6B students were given the task to politely ask parents if they could borrow a METRIC tape measure for the week. We will be learning how to use the tape measures by taking measurements from around the school. Once we have recorded the measurements we will also be practicing how to make metric conversions with the numbers we have (mm, cm, dm, m & km). Be sure to ask about the decimal shuffle which is the new dance move hitting room 8!

Happy measuring!

Wednesday November 11th, our class will be participating in a ceremony at the Puslinch Community Centre to honour the men and women who have fought for our country.

Our Question of the Week is open to both grades and has to deal with Remembrance Day.

In a survey conducted last week, 1,032 Canadians were asked questions about their feelings on Remembrance Day. 70% of the people surveyed indicated they thought all levels of government should enforce a law which makes it mandatory for all Canadians to observe two minutes of silence to remember those that have died. You can read more about this story in the Montreal Gazette by clicking this link: http://www.montrealgazette.com/Remembrance+silence+should+mandatory+poll/2201608/story.html

The question this week is what do you think? Talk with your family members and get their opinions and ideas. Did you have family members who fought in wars? Do you have family members currently in the military? Talk to your family and think about what your stance is on the issue; should it be mandatory (should the government force us) to observe two minutes of silence?

I am interested in your thoughts!

Sorry everyone but there is no question of the week! Tune in next week for a new question!

Instead, today in class I introduced a new project that students will be completing in "partnerships". Students will be writing their own scripts and creating a Photo Story 3 project that will then be shown to the grade 3 class. This project will take a few weeks to complete and I am looking forward to everyone's final results. At the end of the project marks for writing, oral and visual communications and drama will be given. Some students were asking if they could access Microsoft's Photo Story 3 at home to try and make their own creations. You can download it from Microsoft's website for free. The link to the site is http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/PhotoStory/default.mspx

Please let it be known though that I do not expect students to work on their projects for class at home. Using Photo Story at home would be only for fun and practice.

Enjoy!

I challenge you to create your own data set and use the easy to follow graph maker on the website to show your organized data. Print it off or draw it and bring it in to show the class. Possible themes could be Halloween, food in the house or shoe size, the possibilities are endless! Simply determine a way how you are going to organize your information and go from there........ GOOD LUCK!

After taking a week off, QUESTION OF THE WEEK is back!

There is a lot to check out on the blog today as we have been really busy in room 8.

Grade 5's - Your question for the week, is 4 parts.......

Question #1 a) Who was the Prime Minister of Canada when you were born?

                   b) Which political party was he/she a member of?

Question #2 a) Who was the Prime Minister of Canada when your parents/guardians were born?

                   b) Which political party was he/she a member of?

You may want to check out the website http://www.canadainfolink.ca/pms.htm to help you answer the questions.

Grade 6's

- Your question is more of an opinion question to talk about with your family. Ask your family the following question and record their thoughts and ideas.

What would you do if you found out that your favourite brand of clothing was made by children in a sweatshop?

Reminder: This week both grades are starting their final projects in social studies. On Tuesday they will be given a clear outline of the project and the expectations. GOOD LUCK!!!

This week is short due to the holiday and it seems to be moving really fast since the grade 5's are at Earthkeepers. From their reports yesterday the grade 5's are learning lots about our environment and having a lot of fun!

A reminder:

Parents please check in with your child about their spelling homework. There are still some students who are not completing their homework (about 15 minutes of work total) and are losing easy marks on test day when I mark all of their work.

Ok, last week's question of the week had a few responses mainly from the grade 5s! This week's questions is a combined question and it has to do with art. In art, we are going to be talking about how we use lines to create perspective in a drawing or picture. Your quest this week is to find a picture in a magazine, a newspaper or online that you think does a good job at defining perspective. Bring it in and share it with the class (and get a trip to the fish bowl)! If you are not sure what perspective is check out the definition in a dictionary and apply that to art. We will be talking more about it in art class.

Good luck, you may find it changes the way you look at things!

This is introducing the QUESTION OF THE WEEK............ (I hope to post an important question here every week for my students and parents to answer!)

In Social Studies both grades are looking at Canada and the importance it has on the world stage.

The 5's are looking at government. We have been looking at different forms of government and especially the three types that make up Canada.

The 6's have been focused on the concept of trade and how that effects the country of Canada and more importantly Canadians!

I have a question for the 5's and a scavenger hunt for the 6's to answer. If you can successfully complete your task and give me the answer you can hit the fish bowl when the time is right!

Are you ready.........?

Grade 5's- Can you name the three levels of government in Canada?

Grade 6's- You need to complete the following scavenger hunt in your home:

Choose an article of clothing, which country was it made in?

Find a non-perishable food item that was not made in Canada. What is it and where was it made?

Which country was your car made in?

Find something that was made in China. Record what it is.

Find something that was made in Canada. Record what that item is and bonus points if you can determine the province it was made in.

Good luck!

Don't forget this week that the BBQ is on Thursday night! I hope to see everyone there. Also, don't forget to check out our class basket. It is awesome!!!

Have a great week!

Welcome Back Everyone!

The first day of school! Thank you for checking out our classroom blog! This is a spot where the students and I will be posting information and examples of the things that are going on in our room. I will try to update this spot as often as I can but if you need to get a hold of me, please email me chad.guyitt@ugdsb.on.ca or call the school (ext. 430).

Areas of Study

Learning in our classroom will be student-centred and hands-on, following the curriculum expectations for Grade Five and Six as outlined by the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training. We will also be enjoying special language instruction in French; taught by the talented staff at Aberfoyle Public School.

Homework

Homework tasks will be printed by your child in his/her agenda. Work will be sent home for completion if your child does not finish it during class time, therefore if is important for your child to learn to use his/her time wisely in class. If your child does bring home work that has not been completed in class, please encourage him/her to complete the pages and return them to school the next day.

Notebooks and agendas MUST be returned to school on a daily basis so that we may complete our daily work in them.

Agendas: Please check your child's agenda on a daily basis to see what homework (if any) has been assigned and if there are any important messages. I will continue to do random 'spot checks' of agendas to ensure that students are keeping up with the use of their agendas. Also, the week's spelling words will be written in the bottom right hand corner of that week's agenda pages. Please remind your child to do a quick study of the words nightly for the sentence test on Friday of each week.

Notes from home: The students have been instructed that they must notify me as soon as possible in the morning if there is a note from their parents that I need to read.

What is happening in MATH??????

Grade 5: For the first unit in math we are exploring decimal numbers and whole numbers from 0.01 to 1 000 000. The students will learn to compare and order numbers and will explore the use of numbers greater than 10 000 in everyday situations, such as sports events and city populations.

Grade 6: For the first unit in math the students will be extending their knowledge of place value to include numbers to one hundred million and decimal numbers to thousandths. Students will be reading, writing, comparing, ordering and rounding numbers, using tolls such as place value charts and number lines.

***Please engage your student at home by having conversations about numbers in the real world. Also, you may want to check out the link to Nelson Math that is on this page (right hand side of screen) and the follow the links to Nelson Mathematics 5 or 6, Chapter 2 for more suggestions and practice regarding numeration.

A huge thanks to all parents who have come up and introduced themselves to me already! I look forward to meeting everyone's parents at the BBQ which is on October 1st!
