]]> 2012-11-08T14:54:00Z Good afternoon all.  Tonight students have some math homework, they should be completing 1-8 in chapter 3.2 which is multiplying fractions.  Just a reminder to all students that when doing math, it's tremendously important to rewrite part of the question into your answer and ALL answers should include some sort of written component whether it be a statement of conclusion or a note to self about the context of the question.  I'm seeing more and more of: 1. 24 and 2. 78.  There is little  value in doing this, there is no evidentiary thinking present.  Please parents, remind students of this requirement.  Students also should be finishing questions up in science and should be writing their introduction to his/her personal photo essay.

Tonight students should be reviewing for their math test tomorrow.  For those following along, it's on the topic "Pi".  Talk to your kids about what they know, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Ask them about their pre test at the beginning of this unit and how they did.  They should, by now have more confidence about the subject and I suspect most will do fine on the summative assessment. Students also have some language to finish, we are working on metaphors and personification, they have a mid unit assessment on "inferencing" to complete and some have a story and comprehension questions to complete in their current events books.

Just to let everyone know that our annual soccer tournament is tomorrow.  It was originally scheduled for Friday but East Gary never got the memo!  My apologies but forms went home today and I expect kids to bring them back tomorrow if possible.  We are leaving here at 9:15am and should be done around 2:00pm.  If we make the finals, the last game is at 2:00pm to 3:00pm. Please be sure to pick up your son or daughter at 2:00pm please.  I suggest car pooling as this takes the load off some people who can't get out from work.

 

Some students have indicated to me that they won't be at school but instead, working from home.  If so, they have math, chapter 1.5 and 1.6 as well as some science and language.  For those who are coming to school, they will be in Mr. P's class for the afternoon.

 

Just a reminder that the Terry fox walk is on Friday afternoon.  Please send in a small donation for the cause, we appreciate it!

Welcome back to the blog, for some it's been a while since I've posted.  I have a renewed spirit in posting homework and notes, I wasn't convinced anyone from previous years' were reading it.  My plan is to post weekly, the curriculum plans and objectives in and around the school and I plan to post brief messages about reminders and anything that might pop up.  Please check in weekly to find out what's going on in grade 8!

 

This week:

 

Math:  Working through chapter 1.2, 1.3 Circumference Relationships and Area.

Language:  Working on unit of inferencing.  Students are writing a short story about a fairy tale character in another setting.  The reader has to inference what story their character comes from.  Also, each student has picked a novel for some school and home reading.  Please talk to your son or daughter regarding their choice of book.  All are high interest reading, please encourage them to continue with it on a regular basis.

Science:  Students are working on "heat".  Students will have at least 1 lab to complete this week and likely a quiz on what they've learned thus far.  Quiz likely on Friday...

 

Tonight, students have some language to complete.  They are finishing their story organizer and an assessment of learning from our first subchapter.  They should be writing complete sentences to describe the infereces they've pulled out of our story.  Math, students should be finishing chapter 1.2 questions 9-15.  Some students who I have spoken to only have to get to question 9.  They know who they are!

Tonight students should be reviewing their math notes in chapter 7 for a final assessment.  This has been a difficult unit for some people- many quizzes with failing grades indicates a lack of understanding or a lack of practice.  I'm more inclined to believe it's the latter.  We have been reviewing and trying to consolidate practices but students need to be reminded that school is a priority and homework and review are required.  Our final ski date has been re, re scheduled for Thursday of this week.  We are hoping to get it in- let's hope for better weather.  Lastly, grad pictures are in, they will be sent home tomorrow along with a cheque request for Quebec.

Our presentation to the school will be held on Friday February 17th, 2012.  We don't have any interested participants from our class this year which is a bit of a disappointment.  We are trying to drum up some competition as our students really do have some wonderful content ideas.

]]> 2012-01-30T14:54:00Z Good afternoon all, tonight students have a bit of science and math (6.3) and they should be well on their way with speeches.  I've reminded everyone as well that it only takes a bit of reading before bed to really dig into some red maple reading.  Students can literally get through a book in a week if they take the time to read before bed.

Students will have an opportunity to speak with the guidance department from Westside as Mr. Brad Sippel will be in to talk about course selections, and all the happenings at Westside. This is once again part of our transition plan for our 8's going to highschool. On Wednesday, students have have grad photos in the morning.  I've asked girls to bring a white blouse to wear and the boys, a white dress shirt.  No need to iron the shirt other than perhaps the collar.  If boys or dads have a blue or red tie, please bring it in.  I will have some ties available and will help each of them get it tied correctly.

Well, we had a pretty decent day skiing on Friday.  Not a ton of snow as you are well aware, but our kids made the most of the day.  We are looking ahead to next Friday and hoping that some more snow is on the way. 

Tonight students should be reading their red maple(as always for the next while), they have math, chapter 6.1 and they need to be organizing their subtopics for speeches(due Wednesday).  On Wednesday students have a science quiz on the first cells unit.  Lots to do in the next while, I've reminded them that they need to be on their homework, and when they can't get it done, let me know before hand.

Just a reminder as well that the Westside, Parent Open house is this Wednesday at 7pm.  I've asked students to have their course selection sheets into me no later than January 31st as that's when the guidance department from Westside will be back to visit us.

]]> 2012-01-09T14:54:00Z Good afternoon all!  Hope everyone had a great break with lots of rest and relaxation.  We are ready to go with lots of cool stuff planned for January and beyond.  I sent ski forms howe with students tonight. I apologize for not getting them out sooner, but we were hoping to bus with Laurelwoods to save money- they unfortunately can't help us out this year.  So, please, please get those forms in as soon as possible so that we can get all the paperwork taken care of.  Also, of note, the Westside open house is this January, 18th, 2012.  This is an opportunity for graduating students and parents to learn a little about what highschool will be like.  Please plan on attending.

Tonight students have some math homework.  Tonight they have math in chapter 4.4 to Finish.  We are also approaching Speech season and students need to start thinking about unique and interesting speech topics.  I hope we are able to get a few who want to go to the gym.  Finally, students chose a red maple novel as we begin our Forest of Reading unit.  I am expecting that students are reading their novel each night as we try to all reach the goal of having read all ten novels in the set.  This is of course a lofty goal, but I can tell you that this year's novels are quite compelling and a good read for all.  I even implore parents to pick up one of the novels!

]]> 2011-12-22T14:54:00Z Afternoon all,  just wanted to pass along my heartfel best wishes for a safe and fun break this holiday.  I know people will be out and about enjoying themselves with family and friends, please take time to reflect on your family, do something togeter and share some quality time.  Likewise, take your son/daughter out and do something for the community.  It could be as simple as picking up litter in a park or donating your time at a foodbank.

I want to give a big shout out to our turkey shoot winners, J and K.  Both are donating their turkey to Family transition place in Orangeville so they too can have a great dinner at Christmas. I'm very proud of both of you, it takes a selfless person to give without notice or receipt. 

No homework tonight, we are finishing up a small unit in language and math and putting the rest on hold until the new year.

]]> 2011-12-12T14:54:00Z Good evening all,  tonight students have a bit of homework, they should be finsihing off their sequential text structures assignement and they have questions 1-8 in chapter four of the text.  In language, students need to finish off a paragraph on outlining the steps to making a sundae.  They need to include rich vocabulary when setting up topic sentences, sequence steps and clincher statements.  In Math, students received their marked math tests and have embarked on a new Data management unit looking at Probability.  We've discussed the differences between probability and odds and how companies sometimes mislead the general public into believing they have a realistic chance of winning a contest or lottery by posting the "odds" of winning a prize.  As we know, the probability of winning a prize is very different from the odds and should always be considered when calculating the likelihood of an event happening. Just a reminder that our seasons have changed- we still have students coming to school in shorts and sweaters.  Please consider appropriate clothing as a condition of attending school.  If there was a fire or an issue on the bus and a student is inappropriately dressed, there could be serious consequences for that student when exposed to the elements.  Thanks for the consideration.

]]> 2011-11-30T14:54:00Z Happy November 30th 2011 everyone!  Hard to believe that December is here already!  I must apologize for not posting recently.  It seems like every second day we are out of the building or I'm out of the building.  December should be better, not too much going on leading up to the break.  Just a reminder that Breakfast with Santa is on Saturday from 7:30am until 10:00am. We would love to see you there.  I will be there as always, cooking sausages with my partner in crime -Mr. P.  If you didn't know, this week we had a presentation from our representative from Skills Canada-Ontario who spoke to us about jobs in trades.  As you may or may not know, our school takes participates in the regional, upper grand skills competiton in April.  We are very much looking forward to another great year- we are hoping to compete again in the seven disciplines.  Tonight students have math, chapter 3.4 questions 1-10 and should be working on their culminating task in language.  All students know what they are doing, they just need to do some over the next couple of nights.

Just a reminder that trappers and traders forms are due in now.  We go on our trip next Tuesday so we need money and consent forms in as soon as possible.  Also, the end of the magazine campaign is coming to an end.  This is our only fundraiser for the Quebec trip so we hope families will take advantage of it.

Tonight students have some math and language as well as history to finish up.  In math, I've noticed that some students haven't been comitting to the problem solving portion of their text.  Sitting in groups today, most could not explain how to solve a number of problems from the chapter.  For tonight, I've asked that they go back through their notes, and make sure they know how to attack and solve the problems laid out in the book and if they are still unable to do them, have them bring it in tomorrow and we will address it in class.  In language, I've asked that they complete their Dear Abby articles in their newspaper scrapbooks.  History: students are reading chapter 2 and 3.

Just a reminder, if you haven't sent in your interview form, they are overdue.  Also, we had QSP magazines come in to kick off our annual campaign.  Students have been given magazine subscriptions to sell in support of their trip to Quebec this spring.  We are hoping that students do take advantage of this opportunity as it will be the one and only fundraiser this year.  Lastly, a reminder that it is remembrance day tomorrow.  We are recognizing the day with an assembly beginning at 10am.  Please attend if you wish.  Have a great night!

Tomorrow students will be participating in the annual career pathways career fair at Orangeville Fairgrounds. This is late in coming home, I realize this and apologize.  I was extremely ill after the soccer tournament and with the PD day, there was little time to get the information out.  So, going forward, I 've sent home a detailed package outlining the event, which for us, is in the afternoon.  Students will go on a bus to and from the fairgrounds and will be back for buses at 3pm.  The cost of the event is free but our bus cost is $7 per student.  Please help me out by ensuring this comes into school tomorrow, I would hate for one of our students to have to miss it because they forgot their sheet.

Also, this week, as you may or may not know, is our Halloween Dance night.  This thursday our room will be turned into a very spooky haunted house.  Tomorrow I will be sending home a small note outlining a few items we will need.  Please help us out if you can, this is a great evening for our students and community.

Tonight students should be finishing chapter 2.3 in the text and they have a history/geography test which they will be working on tomorrow morning.

]]> 2011-10-11T14:54:00Z Good afternoon all!  Today, students received their picture portraits and class pictures.  Please ask to see them so they aren't getting crumpled in his or her backpack for too long.  Tonight, students have some language to do, they are to find a fable or fairy tale they might be interested in and summarize that fable in their scrapbooks.  Starting tomorrow, they are going to research their fable using the five w's and then write a headline story about the main character and the events in their fable.  In math, we've started the Pythagorean Theroe- chapter 2.1 q1-9.  Please take a moment to talk about this concept with your child, it's a difficult one to understand but with time and application, students will soon realize that the concept is really not that difficult to understand or apply in a variety of situations.

Just a friendly reminder also that tomorrow is Terry Fox Marathon day.  We are running rain or shine so prepare for both!  I've challenged the kids in that if they can bring in $200 for our class, my hair (and what's left of it) will go!  Yup! Just a reminder that our students are participating in a "water education day" at Island Lake Conservation area tommorrow.   We welcome any and all parents who would like to joing us- just send me a quick email to let me know you would be on board.

Tomorrow students should pack a healthy and filling, litterless lunch with water bottle. Tomorrow's weather forecast is calling for sun with a high of 21.  PLease plan accordingly.  A rain jacket might be a good item to pack in case it does shower.

I've also assigned some homework for Wedensday.  Students should have all of chapter 1.3 done in Math, their newspaper title pages and they all need their own copy of a newspaper- preferably the Toronto Star.

Welcome to another fantastic school year!  I'm so excited to get going; we so many exciting things to experience, from our career fair this fall to our spook room, to our open house at Conestoga.  Our students are going to have some wonderful opportunities to learn about our school and community.  As you may have known from past teachers like Mr. P and Mrs. Hunter, this blog is an excellent way to get an idea of what's going on in our world.  Please note, I try to post notes and homework every night, so please check often.

 

Tonight I've sent home a number of forms that require a parent's attention, some of which needs to be returned tomorrow or shortly thereafter.  Agenda money, newsletter and insurance sign off are the items that need to come back, the other items should stay at home.

 

No homework tonight, students have made a notation in their agenda and I have signed them.  This, I will try to do on a regular basis.

Our Brock trip is just a couple of days away and everyone is tremendously excited.  All of our last minute items have been taken care of and we are anticipating fairly decent weather for the rest of the week.  As we've seen lately, that may change quickly-let's keep our fingers and toes crossed.  Just a reminder that all the information needed for the trip is in your hands. I've provided all students with phone numbers, addresseses, directions, packing lists and instructions for drop off and pick up.  Parents, please adhere to the instructions laid out in the package for Wednesday.  Things get very chaotic when we have many people doing a lot of different things that morning.  I will also attempt to post a blog while we are in Brock, please check back in regularly and we'll hopefully keep you up to date with what's been happening.

Just a quick note tonight.  Students have math, chapter 5.3 questions 1-8 for homework.  Likewise, I've asked students to do some research on retired general Romeo Dallaire of the Canadian Army, and more specifically commander in chief during the United Nations campaign in Somalia.  Focus on the 5 w's with significant focus on his peace keeping in Somalia.  We are beginning a unit on tolerance and understanding with respect to societal conflict etc.  Also, just a note that we are still experiencing a significant lack of effort in our secondary subjects like Science.  A number of students are not bothering to even take notes during lectures!  I find them doodling in books, not even bothering to be involved in the discussions!  We are still in May and school doesn't end until the end of June. I encourage every parent to speak to your child, find out what they are doing in class, ask how they are taking ownership!  

Just a reminder that tomorrow is East Gary's track and field day and Friday is our talent show.

]]> 2011-05-17T14:54:00Z Students have math, chapter 5.1 to the end of the chapter for homework.  Students did not do well on their Algebra Unit test.  Even after significant reminders to follow up on chapter problems and questions, many students did not practice or study for the test.  We discussed how important it is to finish strong to the end of the year and to not give up so early as many of these concepts will be applied in highschool.  The mean for this test was 68% with an average score of30.8/45.  The max score was 42 and the minimum was 18.5; there were 4 students who achieved 80% or above and 6 students who achieved less than 50%.  I hope to see an improvement with effort and interest as we move towards June, we won't stop the learning opportunities until the end of June- I hope we can concentrate our efforts going forward.  Just a reminder that some Brock forms are still not in, and those students who are not going to Brock, we ask that you forward in the note sent home asking to confirm whether or not they would be at school for those three days.  Please just send a note in if you don't have the form.

Problem of the night! ]]> 2011-04-27T14:54:00Z Afternoon everyone,  tonight students should be finishing off chapter 6.1.  Yes, this has been assigned for a few days now.  It seems that either this unit is proving to be harder than I anticipated or students are choosing not to do their homework.  This is the third hardest unit we will cover this year.  Developing expressions and equations from number and picture patterns is difficult.  I hope we can stay on top of this and really do well on the unit- it will definitely be a focus going into highschool.  Students also have a language assignment to do, they have an earth day evaluation to complete as well as some questions from todays lesson.  Just a note as well, students have a science reading and a quiz this Friday.

Today students had their recent math test returned to them.  Most did very well, there were a few that struggled- please ask how your child did on the test.  Tonight, students have chapter 6.1 for homework in math.  In language, we are continuing on our advertising unit- we have a few more commercial presentations to do tomorrow and then students will be working on some writing tasks.

On a side note, students will be receiving their Brock packages in the next week or so.  There are a variety of forms to fill out, please take your time with them so we can avoid having them sent back.  Speaking of Brock, some parents have expressed an interest as a chaperone.  We have two moms who have made the commitment and each have CPR and First Aid- thanks again for offering!

Also, I'm still waiting for some people to bring in their swim and Kitras forms.  A reminder that we are all going this Wednesday.  The Kitras glass studio is doing a tour, demonstration and glass blowing for those who are interested.  I need all forms in tomorrow- this is a trip that reflects part of the curriculum- there is no cost to the student unless they are interested in doing the activity.  Please parents, please ask your son/daughter for the form so we can get this all taken care of.

Tonight, students have math homework- chapter 13.4 to the end as well as a supplement sheet.  We are fully into a unit on angle measurements.  This is a tough unit, students need to work on problem solving to answer many of the questions.

Tonight, students have Math, Chapter 13.1 and 13.2 to finish up. Likewise, students have 5 science questions to finish for tomorrow's class.  A number of students didn't finish a reading inventory from last week and they have tonight to finish.  In language, we are talking about how famous people often represent products or services for financial gain but don't realize that what damage such a partnership can have on their image. Students need to write about two specific examples they know about.  This will be research for a larger project they are going to start where they will develop a satire of a famous person advertising a product that is totally opposite to that person's personality.

]]> 2011-03-29T14:54:00Z Evening all, just a quick note.  Tomorrow, students have a math test in integers.  We've worked on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers- we've also worked on order of operations and problem solving with integers.  Some people have resolved some of the issues with calculating in context, others need some more practice.  Tonight, students should be working to finish off 11.5, 11.6, and then should work on selected questions from the practice test and review.  Students have been taught numerous strategies and should practice employing these as they work through tonight's homework.

As a reminder, we are swimming tomorrow, please remember swim clothes.  For those students not going to swimming, they will be expected to attend school where they will be working on a swim unit.  Swimming is part of our physical education unit and every student will be responsible for learning in some capacity.

]]> 2011-03-28T14:54:00Z Sorry for the absence everyone, passwords and all- technology is a wonderful thing...  Tonight, students are finishing up some poetry based on a new age piece of writing found in our Nelson Literacy Unit- My Pockets Ain't that Phat.  This is a focus on the use of Metaphors to allow the reader to make inferences in our writing.  Much the same as you would do about a person's artwork.  Students should also be working on 11.5 and 11.6 in math- we have a math test this Wednesday.  All students have this for homework tonight because I only assigned up to the middle of 11.5 on Thursday of last week.  Some of the students seem to be struggling with subtracting integers as well as the order of operations in integers- it would not hurt a bit to do some more practice with them.

Just a reminder that we swim on Wednesday of this week.  WE ARE ALSO SWIMMING ON THURSDAY OF THIS WEEK AS A MAKE UP DAY TO LAST WEDNESDAY. 

Also, we are planning a KD fundraiser for the Moore Family.  Please ask your son/daughter for that information.  This is a very important fundraiser- the Moore family could really use our help going forward.

Tonight students have a french quiz to study for and that's about it.  A good night to do some reading.  Today students wrote a challenging math test, many did quite well but shockingly, many couldn't find percent of a number.  Guess what we are working on during our next unit?

Students will have homework tomorrow night- many did poorly on writing an editiorial.  We will be editing and revising for the following week.

Students received their grad photo proofs tonight, please ask to see them.  Also, students received their swim forms for our annual swim program at Fergus arena.  The cost is $45 for five swim dates.  I encourage all students to take part in this as it is a great way to get into some spring activity.

A bit of a surprise this morning for sure.  Two long weekends in a row- nothing to complain about. Tonight, students have some math homework as there is a test this Wednesday.  Students should be finishing up chapter 3.5 and then the review and practice test before Wednesday.  A number of students have not completed their Red Maple Reading novel study which is now overdue.  Students have until tomorrow to finish it. 

Also, just a reminder that grad portrait day is coming soon.  Graduates will be sitting for photos on February 23rd at 8:45.  Girls should where a white blouse or alike, and boys should where a white, collared dress shirt and a darker coloured tie -preferably with East Gary colours of navy and red but not exclusive to.

Thank you all for you kind donations to our "Breakfast with Santa", we had a great time,  albeit a bit early for my liking.  We raised some money for the school, and once again, our community came together to enjoy each other's company and the spirit of the season.  Tonight, students are working on a descriptive revision.  We just don't seem to be there when attempting to illustrate descriptive words etc.  We are getting better but we need to develop stronger word choice when using adjectives and adverbs. Help your child revise their work so they can get a better sense of how descriptive words paint a picture.

There are some worksheets on verbs, adverbs and adjectives.  Practice of these help word choice when writing our descriptive pieces.

We are working on finishing up chapter 12.4 in the math textbook.  Inequalities are proving to be a difficult concept for some students.  If  you get a chance, go over some of the ideas with them and do some practice. They will get it eventually, it just takes some time.  Students are also working on some descriptive writing- they are working with vivid verbs to enrich their personal pieces.  Tonight they need to type out their good copies and have them ready for tomorrow.  With the finished piece, a friend from class will use the writing piece to make an illustration of what they wrote.  The more detail in the writing will make it easier for the friend to do the drawing.  As always, students can email me there draft and I will print it off before they get to class!  Don't forget a title page and double spacing!

]]> 2010-11-11T14:54:00Z I want to let all our parents know that I was pleased with the maturity shown at our remembrance day ceremonies.  It's that type of leadership we expect at East Gary-way to go intermediates!  We had a great afternoon making biscuits as part of our mixtures and solutions unit.  We discussed some scientific issues related to cooking and it appears we have some budding chefs in the bunch.  Students will be moving on to History and Geography next week and I will be teaching the 6-7's science.  I don't think everyone heard me say that math, chapter 12.3 should be finished up for tomorrow.  Students have a dance tomorrow afternoon- it's a $1 to get in- if they choose not to go to the dance, they can spend some time in the games room.  Also, we have our theme for Breakfast with Santa, we are choosing "Primitives".  You may have seent primitive stuff in the Country Sampler magazine and there are many stores around the area that have these items.  Any and all donations would be greatly appreciated.  I also will be attempting to contribute to the occasion.

Tonight, students have some language to finish up as well as math in chapter 12.3 1-8.  A number of students need to do a better job with organizing their work- particularly in math.  We've emphasized the importance or working through equations from top to bottom, ensuring that each step is mapped out according to each students level of understanding.  If students require multiple steps to work through an idea or concept, they should be mapping each step out.  Likewise, it helps to draw a picture as another opportunity to understand what the question is asking.  Students are encouraged to underline chapters, sub chapters, dates and important information as they work through units.  Working on these things helps organize concepts for studying later on and students get a real sense of accomplishment when they know their evaluative marks are partly due to his/ her conscientious efforts.  

Just a reminder that magazine and east gary wear orders are now over due.  On November 11th, we will be having our Remembrance Day assembly in the gym at 10:00am.

Just a note, yesterday we worked on a website called myblueprint.ca  This is a website dedicated to tracking our students professional learning plan from grade 7 all the way through to grade 12.  I encourage you to look at the website with your son or daughter and make some long term plans that you can record.  This is a great website, each student has their own unique log in and password.  Ask them about it!

Homework tonight, students have 1.6 questions 1-8- problems involving circumference and area.  They also have some language to do tonight- questions as well as a rough draft of a letter.  They have all they need.  We worked on a science lab today, all students completed the physical lab comparing 2 solvents and their solutes.  Lab results are due FRIDAY...  Great work on the lab today by-the-way.  Kids for the most part were diligent and hard working.

Yesterday I sent home some insurance information and I want to make sure everyone got it and understood why I was making it an issue.  This year, the board requires proof that you have insurance for your child when they travel on year end school trips.  I've sent home a pink sheet and a brochure advertising the insurance carrier the board is using this year. Every student needs to return that pink sheet stating that they have their own insurance, will be purchasing insurance or they are not purchasing insurance.  In the case that a student does not purchase insurance and does not have a standing policy that covers them, that student will have to purchase 2-3 day insurance that covers the duration of the trip or they won't be able to go. This is a board policy.  Pleae review the insurance policy and check to see whether or not your children are covered should they go on a year end trip to a place like Brock University.  If you should have concerns with this, please email or call me and we can figure something out.

Thanks to all the students and parents for coming out to our annual bbq.  It was great a great night and a great way to kick off the year.  For those of you I didn't get to see, please don't be a stranger.  If you happen to be at the school, drop in and say hello.

Tonight students have Math, chapter 1.2 1-15 (finish the chapter).  Some students have a writing diagnostic they need to finish for tomorrow as well.  As always, the expectation is that students should be doing some reading or something educational for 20-30 minutes  if they are done all required homework.  Please read a newspaper article with your son/daughter or help them choose a new book to read.

Each student brought home a flyer indicating that their will be a new "math homework help" website set up so that students can go online to get help with some of those tougher concepts in math.  Please check it out.

Hopefully you all received the form for Island Lake Conservation area next Monday September 13th, 2010. I apologize again for the lateness of the forms.  Could you please ensure that the forms and money are in tomorrow if possible. I will accept forms on Monday morning but it's difficult to get paperwork done when you are trying to get on a bus.  Unfortunately, if students are unable to get forms in by Monday morning, they will be billeted out to other classes for the day doing regular programming.  I do require some parent volunteers-any and all parents are welcome.  We should have room on the bus so come along if you wish. As mentioned, it's $10 for hotdogs, bus and new water bottle.  Should students not want a water bottle, the cost is $5.  Some kids have indicated they don't want a water bottle and will only be bringing $5- that's okay with me.

Homework tonight, students have math, 1.1, questions 1-10.  Pi is a difficult subject.  If you find your child is having difficulty, don't worry, and certainly don't spend a significant time on it.  Try some, leave it if it's seeming to be too much.  We take a lot of time with it, we can usually consolidate some ideas before the end of the unit.  A quick note would be good to let me know how things are going with homework should there be difficulties.  Students are also working on some personal poetry to begin the year.  They are responsible for writing one of the three pieces tonight and we will finish off the rest tomorrow.  Thanks to those students who were proactive and told me they were going to be out all night and wouldn't be able to get to their homework.  That's what we want students to be doing!  Be responsible. Show initiative!

I'm finally on and ready to roll this 2010-2011 school year!! I'm very excited to get going, we've got a great class and I know it's going to be a fantastic.

First off, thanks to all the parents that responded back with student information and the newsletter.  It's extremely helpful to get that stuff in and organized.  As a side note, there were a couple of errors with the dates listed at the back of the newsletter.  To be clear, the parent teacher bbq is on September 15th which is a Wednesday. I will clear up the other dates as we get closer to the time- I believe it's just the day of the week that I mistyped.  Anyway,  I hope to see you all at the BBQ.

As a quick note, we have a Water Education Day slated for Monday, September 23th, 2010.  I will have the forms out tomorrow and hope to have them all back on Friday if possible.  At the very least, Monday.  The cost of the event will be $10 which will include a hotdog lunch, a new water bottle and the bus to and from Island Lake.  Of course, parents are welcome to come, please indicate on email or the form if you are available. 

Tonight, students have some math homework which is a review of some concepts they learned last year.  They are required to finish 10 questions on page 9 and 10 of the text.

Hope things are well with everyone.  We are getting very busy for the end of the year.  We are still working hard with lost of last minute learning.  Students are writing a small, non fiction about technology- something that has improved life for Canadians over the last century.  The topic is fairly wide open but we are working on different types of non fiction where students might write some sequential, enumerative, descriptive, cause and effect or compare and contrast paragraph as a means to speak to their particular subject.  They are still writing an introduction, 3 paragraph bodies and a conclusion but we are trying to diversify our writing styles to make the content more interesting. Students should have their planning sheets done by now and they should be working on their introductions.  We have spent a considerable time with opening sentences so I'm looking forward to some really creative stuff!  Students wrote a math test today so there is no math homeowork - perhaps some students need to be working on the planning sheet.  There is also some other language in some comprehension questions I gavethem this morning.  Students also have some French due tomorrow and some Science due Thursday.

Students were given a note for you the parents indicating a meeting for all interested in helping out with graduation.  I hope you can attend this Wednesday June 9th, 2010 at 7pm-room 8.  I have some ideas about the theme but would gladly accept any creative input you might have.  If you can't make the meeting but are still interested in helping out, we'll likely need you the evening before grad day or the day of- please make a notation on your calendars.

By the sounds of things, the kids had a great time in Quebec but like me, they are pretty tired.  Might take a few days to get back into the swing of things.  We did have a great time in Quebec and I appreciate all the support parents provided us in getting this trip to happen. 

Tonight students are working on chapter 11.4 1-8 and grade 7's should be working on finishing up the mid chapter review.  Grade 7 and 8 students have a reading for Language to do- they received it today and should have it read for tomorrow.

Students asked for a problem to solve, so here it is.

Chuck and his mates were selling cookies. They sold 4 more boxes the second week than they did the first. On the third week, they doubled the sale of their second week. Altogether, they sold a total of 352 boxes. How many boxes did they sell in the third week?

]]> 2010-05-27T14:54:00Z Well, we are still all safe and sound but last night was a tad difficult.  We had a great dance cruise- the kids had a blast and it was a great ride up and down the St. Lawrence.  The parents and I sat at the very top of the cruise ship watching sail boats go by  as the sun set over the horizon.  If it weren't for 75 mile an hour winds it would have been a perfect setting.  Despite the winds, the kids had fun dancing but many kids looked pretty tired.  After that, we walked from lower town, straight to upper town -about 150m straight up- kids loved it!  We still had the winds and the temperature was dropping and we still hadn't had supper.  We decided to call our bus driver and go get something to eat outside of the downtown core- a bit of a mistake.  We found a Tim's, McDonald's and Burger King but because it was outside the city, all the restaurants were working with a Skeleton crew.  They weren't too happy to see 250 kids.  One manager was screaming his head off at me because the kids were lined up out the door!  We figured it all out, got the kids fed and managed to get them to bed at a decent time.  Today we are in the lower town doing some tours as well as the governor general's mansion and the citadel.  Should be lots of fun but there are some tired kids today!!!!!!!!!!

]]> 2010-05-18T14:54:00Z C'mon HABS!  It worked last time, why not again?  It's currently 1-0 - something, anything can help.  I'm not really a HABS fan, just more of a Canadian fan.  Happy watching.  As you probably know, I've been out of the class quite a bit in the last few days and things are going a bit haywire in class.  Student behaviour is a particular issue but I guess I have a bit to blame for that.. We all need to pitch in at this busy time to make it a great year end.  Things are going to go fast and furious and if everyone takes a bit of the responsibility, it will work out well for everyone. 

Students have a bit of language to finish tonight as well as the first 8 questions from chapters 11 and 6. Students will have a Science quiz on Thursday.

Just a reminder that our Standards day is tomorrow and Friday is "Hoops for Heart" as well as the talent show.  Looking forward to a busy rest of the week.

As an aside, please watch for a note coming home in the next 24-48 hours regarding the trip.  I have some last minute details for all parents ands students.  Everything should be in place by tomorrow night as I have a meeting with our other schools as well as the trip co ordinator.  Of course if you have any concerns or details that need to be worked out, you can always give me a call or send me an email.  THis week students have their standards day on the 19th of May-(Wednesday- with the rain date on Thursday.)  This needs to get done this week as we are away all next week. 

A reminder for all parents and students that it is still May and not quite yet June.... 27th.  This means that we still have a month and a half of school left and ALL students need to be mindful that we are still working on new material and will continue to do so into late June.  Please don't jeopardize your grades with so little time left- work hard, do homework and do your best to advocate for yourself.

Tonight students have their final copy of their concrete poetry due and they should be done up to 11.1 and 6.1 in their math chapters (working on integers).

]]> 2010-05-13T14:54:00Z Wow!  I guess my good wishes worked for the HABS.  Great hockey-hopefully you all had a chance to watch it.  Tonight, students have questions 1-8 in chapter 11 and 6 for homework as well as a rough draft of some concrete poetry.  Just a reminder that the intermediates are doing "Hoops for Heart" which is the same as "Jump Rope for Heart."  I've suggested to the kids that if they don't want to fundraise, throw $10 in the envelope if you can and bring it back.  We could easily make around $300 if we all did that.  If students want to get more, we gladly welcome it.  Regardless of the donation, students need to return the forms so the Heart and stroke foundation can determine how many people did fundraising.  This determines our prize level.  It also helps to not have forms laying around or disposed of where people can use to solicit when the campaign is not going on- if you get my drift.

]]> 2010-05-03T14:54:00Z Hi Folks,  hope you had a great weekend.  I want to congratulate all our music students who participated in the Dufferin Festival of the Arts in Orangeville.  Their presentation was fantastic and they were an excellent audience when others were on stage.  Tonight, students should be working on chapter 4.3 and 6.2 respectively.  Also, students have a language rough copy to do- we are working on a free verse poetry piece based in technology.  It's an introspective piece that looks at how we have become our technology.  Also, students have a geography test on Thursday and they are allowed to create a study card that they can use on the test.  They get extra marks for the card so each students should be working on it tonight.  I encourage all the students to be working on this as it will help their mark in geography.

]]> 2010-04-28T14:54:00Z Congratulations to the two students who arrived at school with the answer to last night's blog question.  In fact it was two for two as we only had two submissions.  More people arriving at school reading the blog- great job!  Remember, this is for you... and your parents of course.  You however are driving the car called destiny (a great make by the way).  You are the only one who can make positive choices and changes when they are needed- keep that in mind.  Tonight, students should be on 4.2 and 6.2 working through the first 8 questions.  If students have not completed their language from last night, you get a reprieve, and should be working on it tonight. 

Parents, I will not be in the class tomorrow as we have a board mandated capacity day which means I will be assessing students performance and planning units with other teachers from the junior and intermediate divisions- should be a great day anyway. 

Notes:  Students brought home a flyer indicating that our "Arts Day" is May 7th, 2010.  Students are required to bring in $3 to participate.  We have a wonderful selection of artists coming in to do some work with our students.  This is always a lot of fun for our kids so please support us in this endeavor.

Students have quite a bit of homework tonight.  Students have a French test first thing tomorrow and should be studying tonight.  In language, students are working on a timeline and answering some reading type questions on our unit, "Tech then and Now".  Students also may have some math, Chapter 4.1 f(grade 7 and 6.1 (grade 8) but most have it completed now.  Students should also be working on a geography study card they will need for next week's Geography unit test.  This will be the end of Social Studies for my class as they move into Science for the balance of the year. 

Notes:  Swimming tomorrow, students should bring a pair of pants and sweater for an "in the pool" water test.

Students are also haveing music tomorrow- please bring instruments.

Grade eight students need to bring in a baby picture for graduation.  We will scan it and give it back that day.

I've included a math problem with tonight's blog.  Grade 7's and 8's can solve it.  First one with a correct answer tomorrow get's a sweetalicious treat!  Good Luck!

]]> 2010-04-26T14:54:00Z Hi Everyone, What a great day out there.  Students have language tonight- filling out their scrapbooks with 3 types of questions we are studying.  Literal, Inferential and Evaluative questions are those that are: a) straight from the text B) inferring what the author is truly saying in a sentence C) evaluating the ideas and opinions in the author to see what exactly they are trying to get at.  Students should be reading the article on "Silly Puddy" and determining these types of questions from the reading.  I would say three of each type would be good.  Student can also be doing some math, although I'm not sure my supply teacher assigned any.  Students can work on the beginning chapter of our algebra unit- looking at, and establishing ideas about patterns.  More for tomorrow anyway.

]]> 2010-04-22T14:54:00Z Hello everyone, another gorgeous day out there today.  Tonight, all students have a language profile they are working on.  We are into our new unit of "technology then and now" and we'll be pushing hard right through until June so let's keep working hard.  Students should also work on the get ready for Algebra section of their text.  The grade 8's are on chapter 6 and the grade 7's are on chapter 4.  We've completed our unit on Data Management and the marks have been tallied.  Please ask how your son or daughter has done in that unit.  Many students are missing homework assignments in a number of classes.  French, History/Geography, Math and Language and Science are priorities.  Parents, please continue to check this blog and observe whether your child has homework on a nightly basis.  Our policy in the intermediate division is that students will have some light homework every night from Monday to Thursday. 

Just a reminder that students have a dance tomorrow

Yearbook flyers went home last week-students get a year book for $5 dollars.

Students swimming next week need to bring a pair of track pants or regular pants and a sweater.  The test will see how long they can keep aloft with full clothing on.

P.S.  The first person to tell me the 27th word in this blog from the start (and not including the title) will win 1 free pass to the movies.  All submissions must take place no earlier than the bell at 8:45am and students (and or parents, yes you too), are not to be waiting in the washroom or in the school.  All early submissions will be null and void if entry occurs earlier than 8:45am.

Hope everyone had a great weekend..  I however was sick and continue to be.  No fear, still at it hard and strong-should be back to normal in no time.  Students are beginning a new unit in language today.  We are beginning a "Tech then and Now" unit where we are examining a number of scientific innovations that have improved the lives of Canadians over the last 50-100 years.  Students are working on a Title page for homework tonight that will be part of their art mark.  In math, both grades have a test on Wednesday in Data Management.  Tonight, Grade eight should be finishing up chapter 10.4 and the sevens should be finishing up 12.4. ]]> 2010-04-13T14:54:00Z Hi Everyone!  Our annual County Basketball tournament is being held tomorrow and I will be away all day with refereeing in the morning and coaching in the afternoon.  I do have a supply teacher in and the schedule is the same with exception of some alternate programming throughout the day. The day returns to normal on Thursday.  Speaking of which, students have a major assignment in Language due that day as well. Students are writing fragmented fairytales as part of our point of view unit.  Students should be creating a front and back cover of some sort, using recycled materials if possible. Students should be finishing up chapter 10.2 and 12.2 in math (Grade 8 and Grade 7 respectively).

I have sent a note home tonight with students.  We are planning for next Thursday night here in the gym at 7pm.  Just a quick meeting to discuss the details of the trip and to go over any of the details and answer any questions you might have.  The meeting is not mandatory but if you have any questions regarding the details, it would be nice to have you there to engage in discussion.  If you do have questions and can't make it, please drop me a line or send me an email (the better choice) and I will get back to you at my earliest convenience.

Students have a fractions math test on Thursday, please speak to your children about computing fractions and fractions with whole numbers.  We seem to be struggling a bit with order of operations with fractions and such.  I'm hoping we've remediated many of the issues but it would be nice to just touch base with them and have a good discussion about what they are learning.  Who knows, it may clear up some issues for them.  Also, students have a language sheet they are working on for our point of view unit.  Students will be writing their own fractured fairytale as a culminating task.

]]> 2010-03-22T14:54:00Z Hello everyone, sorry for the late post.  It seems like everyone had a great break although it seemed as though some of our students were still on an extended holiday break.  Time to get into the swing of things!  Speaking of which, time is really going fast and we have so much on the go.  April, May and June are going to be crazy busy!  Hold on to your hats!  We have swimming, basketball, track and field, Quebec trip, Graduation, Student success building...  and that's just the tip of the iceberg!  How can you help you ask?  Simple!  Keep reading the blog and help your son/daughter with nightly homework!  Remember, it's okay if something is on at night and homework doesn't get done.  The key is whether or not your student advocates for themself.  Are they attempting to make a compromise for a busy school night?  When are they going to catch up on that missed homework?  Can they take it upon themselves to get it done in 24hours?  Are they staying in at the break to catch up?  These are observations I will be making in third term - it's a very important step in their development. 

Anyway, here is the homework for tonight.

Language:    Students should be finishing off their Olympic Scrapbooks.

Thanks for the overwhelming response to our KD lunch.  After one monster pot and 2 sizeable casserole dishes, many tummies were full.  Man, can these kids eat!  Well done, and thank you for your kind donations.  Tomorrow is our ski day and all students follow the same routine as past ski trips.  Please ensure that your child is driven to and from school if they have ski equipment.  We should be sliding in at approximately 5:00pm.  I would appreciate if you were there at that time to pick up your son or daughter- I realize some parents have conflicts, but I absolutely have to leave shortly after 5:00pm tomorrow night. I appreciate the help.

Just a couple of reminders that Monday is Family day-get out there and have some fun with the kids.  It looks like there will be lots to do around Orangeville, Toronto or wherever.  On Friday of this week, students in J/I have a dance and it is also red, white and pink day in celebration of Valentine's Day and the start of the olympics.  Students who where these colours get in for $1. 

A final reminder as well for all grade 7 students that the Red Cross will be putting on the, " It's not your fault" in service.  This will be from 11:30am to 12:50pm.  Unfortunately, notes did not go home yet but they will tomorrow.

No homework for tonight as we are skiing tomorrow.  Great opportunity to chat with your child.  Find out what they are doing in our courses, what they are learning about etc. Take an opportunity to build some extension with them.  Talk to them about what's happening on the news.  Get them to think critically about an issue.  These are important things.  With no homework posted tonight, students should be reading for about 20 minutes or so.  Have them read the newspaper- it's a great way to engage in a learning opportunity.  There are still many students who have not mastered their multiplication table to 12.  Two step algebra, linear and quadratic equations become difficult if a student is stuck on 6x7. 

Tomorrow looks like it will be a cold one.  Last time I checked it was -8 as the high before the wind chill.  Last week it was quite cool on the face and it was sunny -1.  PLEASE MAKE SURE STUDENTS HAVE APPROPRIATE CLOTHING AND ALL STUDENTS WITH THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE WEARING A HELMET.

My sincerest apologies as I failed to mention that we have a scheduled "Bake Sale" tomorrow in support of our sponsored child in a third world country.  If it isn't too much trouble, would you kindly work with your son/daughter to prepare a small batch of something baked?  The lack of notice was poor planning on the intermediate teacher's part -we take full responsibility.  However, the event will run with what we have, please don't go out of your way to make a special trip, we can make due with whatever.

 

Tonight, if time allows, students should be working on their speech draft.  We hope to have these in good shape by the end of the week- the gym competition will likely take place on, or around the 10th of February, 2010.  Any students interested in participating needs to really make a concerted effort in the next two weeks.  Students interested in particpating in the gym competition will likely present in class during the first week of February.

No real homework tonight, just a couple of notes.  A reminder that students should be at school for about 8:15am tomorrow with their equipment.  We would like them to be in class so we can do attendance as quick as possible and then get them on the bus.  All equipment should be left outside the school, preferably agains the side of the school, against the windows to the right of the entrance.  Once all the morning buses have departed, we will load and leave.  We should be back no later than 5:30pm.  Please have your son or daughter picked up at that time as I need to leave right away.

]]> 2010-01-13T14:54:00Z Hello all and sorry for the lack of posting over the last couple of days.  Tonight, don't forget the open house at Westside.  It's at 7pm and will run for about an hour and fifteen or an hour and a half.  I'm not too worried if students don't get their homework done tonight.  If there is time, students should be working on Chapter 5.5 in grade eight and chapter 5.2 in grade 7.  A few of the grade 7's are ahead and won't have homework.  A couple are trying to catch up tonight.  Our mini essays are due on Friday.  This was assigned before Christmas and their should be no excuses.  Once again if students don't have a computer or printer they can write it out or they can type it up, send it on email and I can have it printed out before they get in the next morning.  Students should also be working on their persuasive speech and reading one of our red maple novels.

 

PLEASE GET  ALL SKI FORMS IN BY FRIDAY AT THE LATEST. IF STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE THEIR FORMS IN, THEY WILL NOT BE GOING ON THE FIRST TRIP NEXT WEEK.

Grade 7's have chapter 2.3 questions 1-10 and grade 8's have chapter 5.3, questions 1-10 for homework.  All students should be reading for about 20 minutes to a half hour a night as we are now fully into our red maple reading program.  These are the 10 best novels in Canada for 2009-2010 and students have all 10 copies available to them- we are very excited that we get to participate in this program!  Students also have Science homework for Friday and they need to use the computer and internet for a technology project they are working on. Each group of students needs to incorporate 2 classes of levers to create a linkage that will rais a 2 ounce weight 20 cm into the air.  Just a reminder as well that the grade 8 girls will be getting their HPV shot.   Also, another reminder about next Wednesday January 13th, 2010 - Westside will be holding their open house to all grade eight students and their parents.  It will run for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. All grade 8 students and their parents are encouraged to go!

]]> 2010-01-04T14:54:00Z Welcome back everyone!  My what two weeks does!  All the kids look bigger than they did before they left.  I like to think of the kids as grade nine students because they will in fact be attending grade nine this fall (minus the grade 7's of course.)  With that comes some greater expectations for work ethic, attitude and effort. 

Tonight, students should be working on math, chapter 2 and 5 respectively for grade 7 and 8.  Grade 7's should be working on their mid chapter review and grade 8's should be working on 5.2 to completion.  Also, students in grade 7 and 8 have a reading passage on Steve Nash to complete.

 

Just a reminder that my class is now on a 3 week gym schedule, they will need suitable clothes to particpate in gym.  Also, students should be wearing coats to school, along with mits and hats.

 

January 13th at 7pm, Westside is having an open house for all grade 8 students going to Westside next year. Please plan to attend as this is an informative evening.  For more information, please contact me at East Gary or call Westside.

]]> 2009-12-16T14:54:00Z Sorry for the delay.  A couple of items to be discussed.  As mentioned through the note home on Tuesday, yes, we are planning a small pot luck lunch for students in the mid afternoon.  Students do not need to bring a lot - just enough for say 5-8 people - small scale.  There is a pizza lunch during morning recess, so I think the luncheon will be enough for everyone through the afternoon.  Thanks for helping out with this activity.  Friday is also red and green day( not sure why you need to know this- dress your child in green and red before you send them to school?) 

 

In January, we will be starting our speech writing for our annual speech competition. Each student will draft, revise and edit a persuasive essay that they will present to the class.  If students would like to particpate in the gym competition, they simply need to let me know and they will be judged against others who also wish to particpate in the gym competition.  Please speak to your child about a topic over the winter break.  Keep in mind that in grade eight we look for interesting and original topics that are thought provoking and, sometimes (but not necessarilly) controversial.  A couple of ideas from last year were:  911, Hoax or Reality?Mummies, demigods and Kings of Ancient Egypt, Socks, The Avro Arrow, Depression Hockey etc.  As you can see, some of the really interesting topics are at the beginning of this list and some of the more generic topics are at the end.  I would like students to think long and hard about a topic that is different.  Hope that helps- it wouldn't hurt students to begin gathering research on their topic over the break.  In fact, we just had a presentation from the Grand Valley Library on how to do research.  They can find many 1000's of periodicals online- all through the GV library!

]]> 2009-12-07T14:54:00Z Homework tonight is fairly straight forward.  Students need to complete an organizer and rough draft for their mini essay they are writing.  We've focused the majority of our lessons on good planning and appropriate technique in writing introductions,  body and conclusions.  Likewise, we've worked on develooping good opening and closing sentences and appropriate transition words that aid in paragraph fluency.  It's almost as if we are dissecting the essay and rebuiling it.  Students should be working on the process, not the product so-to-speak.

No math homework as students wrote their unit test in patterning and algebra today.  Please ask how they did as I returned it this afternoon.

]]> 2009-12-03T14:54:00Z Hello all!  Just a couple of quick notes and reminders tonight.  For homework, students should be finishing up chapters 8 and 12 for grade 7 and 8 respectively.  They should do about 20 minutes of homework there.  Reminder that there are a handful of people who still do not have there multiplication facts to 12 yet.  A must by the new year.  In language, we are writing a mini essay leading up to Christmas.  It's part of our "No Limits" unit where students should be examining a person who demonstrates this characteristic.  Students should be developing a well constructed organizer based on a "five paragraph" structure - introduction, three sub topics, concluding paragraph.  Students may need to do some research before working on their organizer.  We are really focusing on good opening/closing sentences in our intro paragraphs and choice transition/signal words that let us move from one point to another.  This is part of the organizer planning process.  Please consolidate these ideas with our students so that they can get some good practice in.

 

Just another friendly reminder that students should not be coming to school without a change of shoes for indoors.  Likewise, coats, hats, mits are going to be a mainstay from this point to the end of the winter.  Please make sure your child is prepared!

Homework tonight, students in grade eight should be working on finishing 12.4, yes it was homework last night- students had some problems with it.  Hopefully we have straightened that out.  If you are good with inequalities, you can give your son or daughter a hand with it.  Grade 7's have done a good job and have the night off unless they haven't finished to the end of 8.5.  Quiz likely tomorrow.  Students I think should be reviewing or doing Geography as I know Mr. P is behind a bit.  Students also have language, they are to begin researching a person who demonstrates "No Limits".  They need to brain storm some ideas for a mini, three paragraph essay we will be working through over the next couple of weeks.

]]> 2009-11-25T14:54:00Z Hello all!  Sorry for the delay in getting a note out!  Busy times abound!  I wanted to take a quick moment to let you all know how proud we are of your children.  They put on an absolutely outstanding celebration today.  Our seniors were overjoyed by the scrap books and slide shows our students made.  The co ordinators of the program, the Reeve of East Garafraxa and many well wishers were amazed by the talents of our grade 7's and 8's.  Mr. V also had a few words for our class- he was most excited about our commitment, respect and diligence over the last 8 weeks.  Please speak with your son/daughter about the celebration today and about what they learned through this process-I'm sure you'll be quite impressed!  Look for a write up in the Banner and SNAP! Dufferin.

 

Homework for tonight (yes, can't get away that easy!)  Both grades have to finish the chapter they are currently on.  No more than a half hour please.  Reading or multiplication facts can be done if students are caught up on everything.

Parents, don't forget that interviews are Thursday night.  I've sent a note home with students indicating what your time is.  If you find that the time does not suit you, please email me and we can arrange a date in the near future.  Also, a note went home reminding students and parents about our upcoming breakfast with santa.  We are gathering tea and coffee items, so don't delay-get em in as soon as possible.  Cut off is the 27th of November!

 

Also, a number of students have not brought in their forms for our Conestoga College tour for all grade eight students! If they don't have their form in, they can't go!

 

Last but not least, students have been coming to school with out appropriate clothing- specifically coats, hats and gloves/mitts.  Traditionally students at this age tend to focus more on the style of the clothing and less to it's effectiveness.  As the days get colder, I expect students come prepared to meet the demands of colder weather.

Tonight, students in grade 7 have page 271 to do in Math.  This is a "get ready" assignment as we are starting a new Algebra unit.  Grade 8's will also be starting an Algebra unit and their homework is page 386-387.  Students also have a reading and questions on a story about Adrenalin. 

 

Both grades have History, chapter 4 readings due for tomorrow.

 

Just a reminder to all that Breakfast with Santa will soon be upon us.  Our theme is TEA AND COFFEE.  Anything you can donate would be greatly appreciated.  As of this date we have 0 donations from students.  Please help as this is our one and only large fundraiser for the year.

No homework for tonight, we wrote our unit test in Data Management today and tomorrow is our last interview day with our seniors.  From this point forward, we work to complete the biography with pictures and colour.  Students should be commended for their dedication and hard work on this project.  I know our seniors appreciate the respect and interest.  So, tonight, students should be reading for 20 minutes at least and it wouldn't hurt to practice some number facts- there are still a handful of students who cannot multiply to a factor of 12.

 

Tuesday is after school numeracy night!  It will be running- we do have most of our students back!

 

Don't forget, Wednesday is Remembrance Day, please bring a donation for a poppy and please remind your son/daughter that Remembrance Day is solemn occasion that requires more "reflection" than words.

We had nine away again today.  So, Monday they will have a math test.  No homework tomorrow night but they should bring their math home with them this weekend to review their notes. The data management we are working on is not difficult but it's worthy of reviewing work done in class etc.

A letter about Quebec was sent home today.  Unfortunately, if you were sick, the note did not make it home.  I hope to have something posted on the site tomorrow, along with the calendar for November.  Also, I'm going to post a sample itinerary for everyone to either print off or review.  We are very excited about our trip and we have a great price this year-one we've had to work very hard for.

]]> 2009-11-03T14:54:00Z Hello Everyone.  Sorry for the late post.  No post yesterday as I had an inservice in Guelph.  So we've seen a dwindling of students in class over the last 48 hrs.  11 missing students today, 10 yesterday.  Hopefully we can get back on track this week.  There is no homework tonight but there will be some tomorrow.  For students who are absent, they can work on their math -chapter 4 in grade 8 and chapter 3 in grade 7. Students also have chapter 1 and 2 in History as well.  We are into November which means a new calendar and seating plan- look for it tomorrow.  Hopefully all parents have had a chance to look at their son/daughter's fund raising magazine.  We are finishing the program this week!  I hope all students had a chance to sell some!

Congratulations to all the budding East Gary Soccer players.  It was a cold afternoon, but our Raiders played their hearts out and did a great job representing our school!  Well done!  You should be very proud of your accomplishments! Thanks to all the parents who made sure they were there to pick up his/her son/daughter when we finished early.  Next up: Volleyball.

Tomorrow we will be working on building our spook room for the halloween dance.  We will certainly accept any little tidbits of decor etc for the event. We need you!  Also, look for our first Quebec form tomorrow night-yes, it's a Quebec year and we have a great trip planned!

For homework tonight, students should be working on their math, chapter 4.2 (grade 8) and 3.2 (grade 7).  Please finish this chapter and we will take up tomorrow.  Quiz?

 

Also, tomorrow we have our weekly Rose Buddies session with our wonderful seniors!  We are on week 3 of 6 and will be taking notes on his/her adult life in Dufferin County.  What a great program this is!  Please talk about it with your son/duaghter.  Ask about what they are learning from these wonderful and historic icons.

 

In the afternoon we will be travelling to the Orangeville Fairgrounds for Career Pathways.  Check earlier posts for the PDF's I posted about the event.  We will be back in time for buses.

 

Also, tomorrow we have after school numeracy!  This is an after-school program to improve math skills for our intermediate students.  This is a 13 week program that will help with those math topics that can be a little difficult for them.  It runs every Tuesday from 3:30pm until 5:00pm.

 

Wednesday is our annual soccer tournament.  We will be leaving here at approximately 11:45am and making our way to the Amarath Township office (across from Laurelwoods Elementary).  We will be playing three games and then a semi final and a final if we make it that far.  Students should be done no later than 5:30pm.  Please have a cell phone on so kids can reach you.

 

Thursday we will be preparing for the spook room.  This means that we need your help!  Please bring us some spider webs, silly string, masks or costume parts.  We will gladly accept some lights, music or whatever!

Homework for tonight, those who have not completed chapter 4.1 (Grade 8) and 3.1 (Grade 7) should do so tonight!  In science, a few stragglers need to finish labs 2.1 and 2.3 which are the viscosity and chocolate labs.  They should also study for the final unit test on Friday!

I hope everyone had a chance to visit some family this weekend.  The weather is getting colder and the change of seasons has officially arrived.  Out my back window, a large black walnut tree is shedding it's leaves vigourously, one after the other.  It looks like a leaf waterfall!  I guess it's the hard frost we had last night.

 

Anyway, looking forward to seeing everyone Tuesday morning.  Just a reminder that our first interviewing session with our Rose Buddies is this Tuesday morning.  Also, please check which days Music is on this week as we had some people who forgot to bring their instruments.  Let's make sure we are using our agendas to manage this. Just a reminder to parents and students that I will be out of the school this Thursday and Friday attending an inservice with the board.

 

Finally, parents, if you have any extra Halloween "stuff" laying around, we would gladly use it for our spook room which is happening this October the 29th from 6-9pm.  We need lots of spider webs and streamers and silly string.  If you can donate one of these items, we would certainly apprecitate it.

I've taken another step in saving our wonderful forests.  At the bottom of the page I've attached a link to our monthly calendar which you can view in .pdf.  I hope students and parents will take time to review it, and continue to check back regularly for further posts.

 

Please note a couple of items on the calendar.  We will be traveling to the Orangeville Fairgrounds on October 27th, 2009.  This is a grade 8 venture and students in grade 7 will likely be staying back with the other grade 7's in Mr. P's class.  On October 28th, we the intermediate soccer tournament at the Amaranth Township office which is across from Laurelwoods Elementary.  This is an afternoon tournament - more details to follow.  Finally, our annual Halloween Dance Party is happening this October 29th and once again, our class will be transformed into the wonderful spook room we all love and enjoy.  This year we've been offered a fund raising opportunity where we will be PRE ORDERING pizza to be delivered the night of the dance.  We are currently looking for students in class to volunteer with that.  As always, we need maximum participation with the spook room and we need lots of decorations.  If you have something laying at home you could bring in to use, we would gladly take it.   We always need lotts of silly string, cob webs and plastic/rubber bats, snakes etc.  Hope you can help us!
