Hockey Summative

The summative assignment for PAL involves a major project to design a practice with a focus on offensive tactics and the Powerplay, or on defensive tactics and the Penalty Kill. Students need to use Hockey Canada and OMHA teaching resources to complete a series of questions relating to Skill Development Guidelines for practices that are appropriate for the age level of players involved. The Rubric for the PAL Summative should be consulted to ensure successful completion of the project. Practice Tips and Planning from the OMHA Development Manual and the Coaches Drill Book are useful resources in designing the practice. Excerpts from the National Coaching Certification Program Development 2 program for Hockey are to be used to answer questions relating to Defensive Tactics or Offensive Tactics. These concepts should be included in the drill design similar to the offensive and defensive samples provided and are to be presented using the Drill Design Template. Use International Symbols for your drill diagrams.

Leadership summative assignment

Over the semester, Hockey Leadership students have developed and implemented programs in the school and community, individually and in groups, while developing personal and interpersonal management, leadership and peer support skills. In addition to more traditional assignments, leaders participated in group projects to design and implement programs and develop leadership skills. To complete the Leadership courses (GPP 3OH and PLF 4CH), a major culminating project with a choice of topics is required. If you choose to complete the in-season training program, there is some useful information regarding Nutrition and Hockey that Fergus uses in their Skills Academy, and a Nutrition presentation from Wellington, Dufferin, Guelph Public Health.

In addition, detailed answers with personal reflections on 6 Key Leadership Ideas as described by Ryan Walters in December 2009 are required.

Concussions in NHL assignment

Watch the video "What is a Concussion" and read the Globe and Mail article titled "Ken Drydens call to action" to complete your Concussions in the NHL assignment. Roy MacGregor also wrote an interesting article titled "NHL's all-concussion team would be a lock for Stanley Cup".

Biography of a Leader Assignment

Students are to read a biography or autobiography of their choice, of a leader in hockey, business, history, science, politics or another sport. Their book report requires 5 parts described in the assignment outline and rubric available on line. The written report is due before Christmas.

International Scouting Evaluation Assignment

Students will design a player evaluation for a Forward, Defenseman or Goalie with at least 5 categories of evaluation. Each category will have a minimum of 3 criteria to evaluate. A written summary identifying the type of player (Shut down defenseman, playmaking centre, shot blocking goalie etc) will be included for a player of the student's choice.

NHL Coach's Assignment

NHL Coaches Assignment
Given recent firings of NHL coaches, students will research the strengths and weaknesses of Bruce Boudreau and Paul Maurice and decide which NHL coach is the most likely to be fired next. The assignment includes proposing a replacement candidate and justifying their choice.

Hockey Hall of Fame Assignment and Field Trip

On Tuesday December 13, the Hockey Skills Academy and invited guests will leave at 8:00 am for a tour of the Air Canada Centre, a Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes practice and the Hockey Hall of Fame. Students have completed a Hall of Fame assignment that required researching the most deserving 2011 inductee, the most deserving player (or coach, builder) that was not elected this year and which of next year's eligible candidates is the most deserving.

On ice changes for Hockey Skills

To accomodate the Maple Leafs trip on December 13, the boys varsity game has been rescheduled to Tuesday December 20 and the Hockey Skills class will not skate on Dec 20 in the afternoon. In addition, Thursday November 24 is an early release (PLC) day and we will not have class time during the scheduled ice time on this day. These 2 dates have been removed from the on-line schedule. Funds from the ice rentals will be applied to the bus for the Maple Leafs and Hockey Hall of Fame trip.

Maple Leafs Game day skate and HHOF tour

On Tuesday December 13, we have been invited to tour the ACC and experience the Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes game day skate with Hockey Canada and the Toronto Maple Leafs. We will also tour the Hockey Hall of Fame. Departure time is 8:00 am and our estimated time to return is about 5:30 pm.

ENTRY DEADLINE: November 18, 2011

WHO WILL WEAR THE MASK?Canada’s National Junior Team goaltenders during the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship in Calgary/Edmonton, Alta.

SELECTION DETAILS:The design must have the Hockey Canada logo and a Team Canada theme. Hockey Canada will select the winning design based on theme, creativity and artwork.

Ministry funded student project assignment

The Ministry of Education funds student proposals for projects that will improve student involvement at school. The Hockey Leadership program has been approved for funding in each of the past 3 years. Students will work in groups to complete a detailed project plan for implementation of their ideas. Projects will be submitted to the Ministry and those receiving support will be carried out as a class project. More information is available here.

On Ice Schedule for 2011-2012

The on-ice schedule for the Hockey Skills Academy is available on the calendar at the Hockey Leadership page or a condensed version is available here. Ice times are cancelled in the event of a snow day. Most times are from 1:00 until 2:30 but some morning times (from 9:30 to 11:00) are booked when afternoon conflicts occur for ice bookings.
