May is literally flying by! We have been very busy covering several concepts in math this past month, as well as reviewing math strands learned earlier in the year, in preparation for EQAO. A reminder was sent home today in the backpack, but I will reiterate that the dates are Tues. May 28th - Thurs. May 30th. We will be administering the test during the first and second blocks of the day, and give the students some well-deserved activity time in the afternoon. A light snack will be available for each student each morning during the test, but please try to encourage your child to get a good rest, and eat a nutritious breakfast before coming to school.

As a culmination to our science unit on flight, we will have some special visitors come to share their knowledge with us. A scientist will be here on Tuesday June 11th in the afternoon. Students will be involved in a variety of activities and experiments related to air and flight. We will be needing a few extra pairs of hands to help out on that day, so if you are available please send a note in the agenda. Also, a parent, Mr Everson, who is a pilot will be joining us to share his knowledge.

Thanks to those parents who were able to help with track and field last week. We had great weather and saw students having lots of fun running, jumping and throwing! The county track and field date is Friday June 14th. Students who make the team will bring home the appropriate permission forms soon.

Let's hope for continued summer-like weather!

We are very busy here in Portable 9! Even though we have had short weeks recently, students have been working hard on a variety of activities.

In math, we had a quiz today on surface area and volume, which is a combined geometry and measurement unit. Tomorrow we will begin a unit on fractions, ratio, and decimal and percent equivalents. Expect a little more homework to be assigned in the next few weeks, as we finish covering the math curriculum before EQAO testing the last week of May. More information will be coming home on the testing in the next few weeks. Please continue to encourage your child to use the "At Home Help" box, which is on most homework pages.

In English, we are finishing a unit on biographies and persuasive writing. Students will also be completing their last CASI reading assessment of the year soon, before reviewing a variety of forms of reading and writing in preparation for EQAO.

In Social Studies, students are finishing up our Trading Partners unit and will have a test next Tuesday, April 30th. Duotang, title page and a crib note will need to be completed by then. Students should have a good understanding of the expectations around those items. They are also completing a brochure on a country of their choice as part of their social studies. Thanks to Mrs McLarnon, we have the wonderful opportunity to present our brochures to David Tilson, our local MP, mid May, when he will come for a visit to our school! A science unit on Flight will follow. I have invited a scientist to come present some activities around this topic in June and will be looking for some parents to join us for an afternoon.

In Phys Ed, we are patiently waiting for the track and pits to dry up, and then we can begin track and field activities.

Thanks for your continued support around homework and returning forms and evaluations in a timely manner!

Think spring!

Finally, each day is feeling a little more like spring! We still have lots of snow on our yard, so students need to continue wearing appropriate outdoor footwear.

Our student teacher, Ms Pogson, has had a very successful training session over the past several weeks in our classroom. Sadly, her practicum ends this Thursday. The students have really enjoyed working with her and will no doubt miss her. We wish her well in her final weeks as a student.

We have begun a new math unit, measuring the area of rectangles, parallelograms and triangles. This will lead into geometry, specifically 3D shapes and determining their surface areas and volume.

We have also finished up our electricity unit and will begin a social studies unit on Canada's trading partners next week. Science tests and notebook rubrics went home in the agendas yesterday, so please sign and return these when you see them.

In language, Ms Pogson is teaching a unit on persuasive writing, including writing paragraphs, announcements, letters and brochures. We will begin a reading unit on biographies next week as well.

I hope everyone has a peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable Easter!

More crazy weather!! Just a short update, students will have a multiplication quiz tomorrow to see what they understand up until this point in the unit. It will cover prime and composite numbers, factors and multiples, estimating and calculating (paper/pencil) 2 digit by 3 digit numbers. We will not have our electricity test until after the March Break. Students have a few more experiments to complete and will then be expected to create a proof of study sheet that includes the main concepts of the unit, and to complete their notebooks. A firm date for the science test and notebook completion will be set next week.

Students worked last week and this week with Ms Pogson to create news casts based on an event in our novel study. Newscasts were filmed on Tuesday, and will be shared with the class by the end of this week. They quite enjoyed this role-play activity!

We are currently preparing for our annual dance a thon to be held next Friday. Students are asked to bring in food items for the local food bank, or a cash donation for the same.

Let's hope for spring like temperatures to melt all this recent snow!

Yet another snowy day! I would like to extend a big welcome to Karlie Pogson, a student teacher, who will be working alongside me in the classroom for the next several weeks. I think she will enjoy her time with us!

Thanks to parents for supporting your child with his/her speech presentations over the last week or so. All students have now presented, and I was very impressed with not only the quality of topics and speeches, but on how well the speeches were delivered!! Brodie and Julia represented our classroom very well in the gym competition last Friday, way to go!!!

We are continuing to work on our novel study, focusing on plot and character development. This week students will be creating "news reports" to share a shocking development in the story! We have extended last week's Working With Words until this Friday, when students will need to have completed 8 activities using the words.

In math, we are working on multiplication and division, and more specifically, on developing strategies to estimate and calculate multiplying and dividing large numbers and decimals. As usual, students will work through a variety of real-life problem-solving situations using these concepts.

In science, students are currently working on posters supporting a specific energy source and we will soon be working with batteries, bulbs and wires to see how current electricity works. We should be ready for a unit test just before March Break.

Thanks to those people who have signed and returned the report cards and envelopes. Please do so asap if you have not yet done that.

Finally, I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing family day weekend! And here's hoping for an early spring!!

We have had lots of indoor recess days in the past 2 weeks, and I have to say, the kids are coping quite well and continue to be very productive.

Speeches are moving along well, and you should see them coming home next week either on cue cards ready to practice orally, or ready to be put on cue cards. Again, students wanting to be considered for the school competition need to meet the time requirements of 3 to 5 minutes and be prepared to present in class on Monday, Feb 11th at the latest.

We are working on geometry in math and should be ready for a unit test by the end of next week. Check the agenda for exact date.

We are finishing up our explorer simulation, where students are part of a ship's crew, and have experienced, in role, some of the hardships the real explorers went through. We begin an Electricity unit in science next.

The students are enjoying our class novel, Tuck Everlasting. It will be a few more weeks before we have completed this unit.

There will be a Grade 6/7/8 dance on Feb. 15th. More details will come home in the agenda.

Let's hope Mother Nature decides whether it is stilll winter, or spring, or the middle of the Arctic soon!

Happy New Year!

Students have returned well rested and eager to share their holiday activities!

We have begun our measurement unit, with the expectations including students being able to choose appropriate units, measure accurately with a ruler to the nearest millimeter, convert a measurement to a different unit, (for example 2.4m = 240cm )and measuring the perimeter of a variety of polygons. As always, there is a strong problem-solving component in the math program with students working on being able to understand the problem, apply appropriate strategies to solve the problem and communicate their solutions effectively. This is a short unit and the test will be early the week of January22nd.

We have completed the classroom work on our Explorer's unit in Social Studies and will have a test late next week. Again, students will be expected to complete a one page crib note of important information which they can use during the test. Some of that work will need to be completed as homework. Exact dates for both of these evaluations will be in the agendas.

Today we started a novel study with the focus being to on plot development and character analysis.

Please expect an outline to come home this week regarding speeches. It is self-explanatory. Once you and your child have agreed on a suitable topic, please return the planning sheet only with your signature. Keep the outline and rubric for reference. The school competition date is February 15th, so we have sufficient time for all steps in the process. Only those students interested in the school competition are required to write and present a speech between 3 and 5 minutes. Expectations are different for those not interested in the competition, however it is expected that everyone present in class. The best way to support your child through this assignment is to offer an ear during the oral practice stage, and to offer positive feedback and encouragement.

Thanks for ensuring all students have appropriate outdoor footwear, coats, snowpants, etc for this winter weather.

A big thank you goes out to students and parents for all the time and effort that went into creating the wonderful First Nations projects! Thanks parents for encouraging your children, helping them with supplies and perhaps driving them in to drop off their models. Most were shared in the class yesterday and we will be putting some on display in the library for the remainder of this week. If you are in the school, please drop in and take a look... and if you are here Friday, please pick them up. Otherwise, they will go home with the students on the bus on Friday.

We will have an adding/subtracting quiz this Thursday, using large and decimal numbers and then will be ready to begin our measurement unit in January.

In language, we are wrapping up our myths unit and will start a novel study in the new year. This will include a writing unit focusing on voice and perspective writing.

We will be ready to have our Explorers unit test near the end of January and will then begin a science unit on electricity.

Hello Families,

Students have just brought home their First Nations project outlines, explaining the expectations of the project, what gets completed at school and at home, and important due dates. Please sign and return this as soon as possible. I will return it to students to use as a reference, but I need to see that you are aware of this assignment. Students will also be having a Social Studies test early in December. In order to be prepared for this test, they will have an opportunity to create a crib note of important information and they will be able to use this during the test.

We have our data management unit test this Thursday, which will be followed by a unit on adding and subtracting large numbers and decimals.

Most students have completed their DARE reports and will begin reading them in class later this week and early next week. We have tentatively set next Tuesday, November 27th, 2:00 pm as our DARE graduation date, but this needs to be confirmed by Constable Nancekivell this week. Confirmations will come home in the agenda as soon as I know. I hope you can join us for this celebration.

Thanks for returning the bottom half of the second page of report cards with the envelopes so promptly. I look forward to seeing you later this week during our scheduled interview times. Feel free to bring your child along so they can be part of the conversation. I will contact those parents who were unable to come this week to discuss progress so far.

In recognition of Bullying Awareness Week, this Thursday is Pink Shirt Day. Students will be encouraged to wear pink to show solidarity in standing up to bullies. We have had several discussions this year on this important and relevant topic.

Students did an awesome job of researching, creating and presenting their planet projects! We finished the presentations last week, and you have probably seen some of the cool "stuff" the kids created to teach us about their planet... thanks to those parents who went shopping for supplies!! We have just begun our social studies unit of Canada's First Nations, where students will learn some of our country's history around aboriginal groups. They will be asked to do another research project during this unit, but will not begin that for a few weeks... more info will come home on this in the agendas. As with science, we will integrate some of our reading and writing into social studies.

Tomorrow we have our unit test on place value (big and small numbers) and next we will work on data management, (graphing), in math. We have been reviewing the concepts in class, but if your child brings home the text for extra practice, there are lots of good examples of practice questions at the end of Chapter 2, in the skills bank and problem bank.

We are more than half way through our DARE program with Officer Paul. The kids are really enjoying this program and are learning a lot about making positive decisions, how to relate to peers in a positive way, and the harmful effects of tobacco, alcohol and drugs. They will begin writing their DARE reports in class soon, and our graduation date will be set shortly for later in November.

Hope everyone survived Sandy, and Happy Hallowe'en!!

Happy 10/11/12 day!! I hope everyone had an enjoyable long weekend. Fall has certainly arrived! Some days feel more like winter! Please remind your child to have both indoor and outdoor footwear, and coats, mitts and hats are a good idea for these windy, chilly days out on the East Gary field!

Students are well prepared for the Space test tomorrow. Notebooks are nearing completion, including proof of study pages, which students worked on in class. These pages should include the key ideas from the unit, under the headings: Space, The moon, Stars and Constellations, Our Solar System or Planets. Their notebooks will be collected on Friday morning and will be a part of their overall evaluation for this unit. Moon logs are also due tomorrow. All of this information has been coming home in the agendas since last week. Students are still working on researching a specific planet and next week, with their group members will plan, create and present a multi-media project to teach the class about their planet. Lots of time and direction will be provided in class. Students may ask to bring in certain supplies from home to complete these projects, while I can supply the basic materials here at school. Some materials students typically bring from home, or the dollar store, include styrofoam balls, large boxes for dioramas, hangers for mobiles...

Our next unit for Social Studies will be First Nations.

In math, we have looked at reading, writing, expanding, comparing and ordering large numbers. Early next week we will have a brief quiz on these concepts before continuing the unit looking a decimal numbers in the same way.

In English, students are working on organizing ideas around a central topic to write descriptive paragraphs and working specifically on effective introduction and concluding sentences. We are continuing to summarize, find the main idea and identify a variety of text features in non-fiction texts.

Please remember to sign and return bus helper permission forms, the training trip is set for October 24th, in the morning. If you wish to attend, please meet us at the Orangeville Fairgrounds around 9:15.

Photos went home today, and class pictures should follow soon.

Wow! It's hard to believe that September is almost over! Time flies when you are busy!

We have just completed our last learning goal in our math unit on patterning. There will be a unit test next Tues. Oct 2nd in the morning. We will spend the next few days reviewing the concepts, which include students being able to identify, extend and express pattern relationships in chart, graph and expression/equation form. Students may choose to bring home their textbook and do extra preparation at home. Please ask your child to bring the book home if you feel the extra practice would be beneficial.

We are almost ready to begin our in class research/project/presentations on a planet of the students' choice. Time will be provided here at school to do research using books and the internet, as well as to plan, prepare and present a multi-media project. Students will work in groups and have lots of direction from me and Mrs Walker, our resource librarian. Students may wish do do extra research at home, and they may want to bring in certain materials from home as well. A clear, detailed outline of the expectations, timeline, etc will come home shortly. Students should be continuing to log the moon phases every 3-4 days. The last few nights, the moon has been quite visible and bright in the evening sky!

I have reminded students to be sure to have clothes to change into for phys. ed. on days 2 and 4. Several students are still participating in jeans, which is not appropriate. Please encourage your child to either wear or bring suitable clothing for phys. ed. All students should also have shoes just for indoor use.

Thanks for monitoring student agendas and returning all those forms in a timely manner!!!

Each post will include upcoming assignments, tests, special events and an update on what we are learning in Portable 9.

I typically make a new post every week or two, and more often in the busier months. I will have students write a notice in their agendas when a new posting has been made.

This week, we are off and running, learning about space in both reading and science. We will also integrate some writing into this unit. Tomorrow, students will bring home a moon log to record the phases of the moon for about 4 weeks. There is a detailed page with expectations and a rubric coming home for you to read, sign and return so I know all parents/guardians are clear on what the students are responsible for. We will also have made our first entry by tomorrow. I will give the students a chance to see how they can track the moon's phases online as well as other places if the moon is not visible in the sky.

We began our working with words program today as well. Students will have to complete 5 activities by Friday, and will probably get this done during class time. It will come for homework by Thursday if not complete by then.

In math we are working on patterns and using charts and graphs to create and continue patterns.

I have enjoyed getting to know your kids a little bit so far!

I look forward to meeting you at the barbeque this Thursday, Sept. 13th. Hope you can make it!

EQAO is complete and many of the students actually enjoyed the week, according to their journals. Perhaps it was the extra gym time at the end of the day, or chewing gum, or the delicious sundaes, but all in all, it wasn't too bad!

This week we are back to regular routines, WWW, reading, math, science. In reading, we are looking at biographies of some famous flyers, (integrating with science). In math, we are finishing probability, transformational geometry and then consolidating some concepts from earlier in the term. We are finishing our unit on flight and will have a test next week, date to be determined. We will also learn about diversity of living things through our scientist in school visit this Thursday, and some follow up activities to that.

Students are looking forward to our Eric Walters visit this Wednesday. Together, we read "We All Fall Down" in the fall, and several students have read other books by this dynamic author.

Students attending Montgomery Village Public School next year will have an orientation visit next Tuesday, June 12th. A permission form will come home today. Parents please feel free to join us. Students will be walking home from Montgomery that day at 3 pm, unless parents choose to pick them up. There is no bus back to East Gary.

Our county track and field meet is next Friday, June 15th, with several students from our class competing. Congratulations and good luck to those students.

Our helper trip is scheduled for June 20th. All students in our class have been helpers in one form or another this year, and are invited. Permission forms will come home very soon for this movie trip.

Any parents able to attend any of the above activities, please feel free.

A reminder of the P.D. Day this Friday.

We are currently working on our media/advertising unit. We have created a poster, written an announcement, looked at a variety of advertising formats, features and techniques. Students are now ready to create a brochure to advertise for one of Canada's trading partner countries. (Working in the Social Studies content) Students will have a homework assignment to look at and analyze a tv commercial in the next week as well.

In math, we are continuing with measurement, but adding in 3 dimensional geometry, by determining how to measure the surface area of prisms and pyramids. Next will be a unit on fractions, decimals, percents and ratio.

We are wrapping up our Canada's Trading Partner unit in Soc. Studies and will be ready for a unit test this Friday, Apr. 27th. Students will be expected to hand in their notebooks, complete on that date as well.

Our next science unit is Properites of Air and Flight.

We have 2 more swim dates, Mon. Apr 30th and Mon. Apr. 7th. Most kids have been very responsible about remembering suits and towels each Monday. Next week they need to also bring an extra long sleeve shirt and pants as they will be jumping in the pool clothed, to experience accidentally falling into water. The instructors do not recommend jeans or heavy hoodies though.

Hopefully everyone is enjoying spring, and let's cross our fingers for more spring-like temperatures in the following days.

Students are finishing up multiplication and division tests today and these will come home for signatures later in the week. Some students are still struggling with using reliable strategies to multiply or divide. Being able to give reasonable estimations to large mult. and div. questions is very important, as in life most of us will use a calculator to "do the work" for us. Our next math units will be algebra (equations and order of operations) and area.

We are finishing our Tuck Everlasting novel this week and will have a quiz on Thursday. Students should just need to look over their plot summary and character charts they have been building during the unit to be prepared. Notebooks will also need to be completed and handed in. Our next reading unit will be biographies, where we will look at the features of biographical texts and making inferences and connections to deepen our comprehension of the text.

We are also working on a media/writing unit looking at advertising techniques used in a variety of media.

In social studies we have begun our final unit of Canada's trading partners. Students will be completing mini research assignments, which should be completed at school. If work needs to be done at home, further information will be forthcoming.

Our swim program is well underway with 100% participation! It is a very worthwhile program where instructors are able to group the students according to ability to enable all students to continue to develop their skills in both swimming and water safety. This is considered part of our health and physical education program.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter weekend with friends and family.

After a few no bus days, we are quickly catching up on our work.

In math students have been working on various ways to multiply larger numbers. It is important for students to have more than one strategy and to be able to rely on a strategy to get them the correct answer. Ask your child to show you the array box "way" to multiply. Next we will work on division of larger numbers and will again look at various strategies beyond the traditional "long division" process.

Students are ready to share their circuit board games and seem to have enjoyed putting their learning to practice to create these board games with electronic devices! Since the materials are from my electricity bin, games will be dissembled tomorrow after we "play".

Tomorrow is also our annual East Gary dance-a-thon. The theme is spring and we are hoping to raise some money for our World Vision child, Smith. Students are asked to bring a small donation such as a twoonie.

Our next Social Studies unit is Canada's Trading Partners, which we will begin right after March Break.

Students should be finalizing their persuasuve book talks over the break and be ready to present during the week of March 19th.

Thanks to those parents who have returned all the work needing signatures lately. If you have not done this, please check the agenda to see what your child needs to have signed and returned.

Swimming starts the last Monday in March. Please send the form and $45 in as soon as you can.

Have a wonderful March Break and enjoy, especially if you have the opportunity to get away!

I hope everyone thoroughly enjoyed your long weekend and were able to spend some quality family time together!

As usual, we are rolling along at a quick pace in Grade 6, Room 7.

We just wrapped up our school wide letter writing program. Our class had the honour/responsibility of being the postal sorters and carriers. Students volunteered some of their recess time to collect, sort and deliver the hundreds of pieces of mail sent around the school... Mrs. Foster provided a special "thank you" to the students last week with cupcakes!!

We are continuing to write persuasively in a variety of formats. All students were successful in writing and presenting persuasive speeches and rubrics have gone home for signatures. Thanks if you have already signed and returned your son or daughter's rubric. I am sending home a homework persuasion assignment. It is like a book talk, but students will be required to persuade classmates to read a novel they have recently completed. This assignment will go home this week and be due the week prior to March Break. It will involve a brief (1 to 2 min) oral presentation as well.

In reading, we are reading a class novel looking at character and plot development. Students will be asked to write a test at the end of the unit and to complete some writing activities with the novel. If anyone has a copy of the movie "Tuck Everlasting", I would love to borrow it to show the students after we finish reading... please don't allow your child to watch it beforehand, which may spoil the suspense in class!

We have just started our multiplication and division unit in math. Students typically did quite well on the geometry test, which will go home this week for signatures.

In science, we are completing our unit in electricity with a unit test this Friday, Feb. 24th. Students will need to complete a proof of study and all other notebook pages and hand this in on Friday before the test to be marked. As a culmination, students are also creating group circuit game boards in class.

Congratulations to the girls volleyball team, who are headed to the B pool finals next Wednesday evening! No news yet on how the boys team is doing.

Several students have now finished the revising and editing stages of their speeches and are currently putting them on cue cards. I have asked that their good copy be on cue cards to save a step in the process. They may wish to hilight key points as they work towards memorizing their speeches at home. I will collect the cue cards from each student once they have presented in class. Some students have indicated they will be ready for the class presentation later next week. Others will have until the end of the following week to present in class. Thanks in advance for helping your child with their oral presentation practice.... using an expressive tone, eye contact, facial expression and gestures can add interest and hold the attention of the audience.

Please sign and return the latest math test on adding and subtracting strategies that went home yesterday. We are working on geometry now, so you can expect a test in mid February. We will post the specific date in agendas soon.

We will begin a class novel study on "Tuck Everlasting" next week. Much of the reading will be done together, while students will work on follow-up activities independently. Students will focus on plot and character development as well as inferring during this unit.

As part of our unit on persuasive writing, I will be asking students to create a brief book talk to persuade others to read a book. I have asked students to make sure they are currently reading a novel of their choice. Many students are currently reading as part of the Silverbirch club, and these books are perfectly suitable. An assignment sheet will be introduced in class and then sent home for completion. An oral presentation will then be made in class....but not until after all speeches have been delivered!

Our ski day was a great success...the weather was definitely on our side, with fresh snow and sunshine!! Thanks to those parents who were able to join us. Anyone planning to come curling next Thursday is welcome. You can meet us here at the school by 12:25 and ride the bus, or meet us at the Fergus Curling Club around 12:50.

Enjoy your weekend!

Welcome to winter! Just in time for our ski trip tomorrow!

Since we finally have some snow, our trip tomorrow is a definite GO! Mild weather and some rain is in the forcast, so students should definitely dress in layers and have extra mitts and socks in their bag. Snow pants, hats and a waterproof jacket are strongly recommended. Nothing will make a skier more uncomfortable than being wet and cold due to inappropriate clothes. I am suggesting students bring a water bottle and extra snacks as well. Lunch is served around noon, and we are used to eating a little before that. Also, they tend to be hungry after all that fresh air and exercise. Parents planning to join us will also be provided a yummy hot lunch of soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Cost for volunteers is $15. Mrs. Turek's class is joining us, so the bus may be a little crowded, but there should be enough room for parents coming. You are welcome to meet us there or follow the bus if you prefer a quieter ride!!

Once all students have finished their math tests (some absences last week), I will send them home for signatures.

Speeches are well underway. I sent home an updated schedule last week (pink sheet) with a new timeline. Because the school competition is on Feb. 17th, we have a little more time to prepare in class. Most students are working on rough drafts and a few are ready for revising, editing and good copies. Once they are ready for the oral practice/cue cards, they will be coming home in the backpack. Please refer to the rubrics on the green sheet outlining speech preparation when assisting your child with their oral presentation. These will begin Monday Feb. 13th and continue until the end of that week.

We are starting our geometry unit of angle, triangles and parallelograms this week. Students should have a protractor to use. I have extras in the classroom to borrow if necessary.

Please remember to send in curling forms this week. Our trip is coming up next Thursday. Parents are welcome to join us at the Fergus Curling Club, no experience necessary! We curl from 1:00 to 2:00. Kids need a large milk bag to put over their clean running shoe as a slider.

Our school wide letter writing program is beginning this week. I have volunteered our class to be the mail sorters/carriers for the next 2 weeks. We will also be getting lots of practice writing to our school pen pals in Grade 3/4 and others around the school.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holidays. The students came back a little tired, but ready to work!

We are starting several new units. In math we are currently working on adding and subtracting strategies with both large and small numbers (decimals), and improving mental math strategies. Next we will begin a unit on geometry, focusing on angles, triangles and parallelograms.

In language, we are looking a persuasive pieces of writing, in essays, advertisements, letters and speeches. Students will be asked to write a speech in the persuasive form. They will be asked to take a position on a topic of their choice and try to convince their audience that their opinion is the best. We will be doing the writing at school. In a few weeks, students will bring home their speech to practice and polish their oral delivery. I will send home a rubric and further explanation of the assignment with timelines for completion next week, once students have chosen their topics. Because I am assessing their writing, I am asking that students do not receive help at home on this aspect of their speech. Your assistance can come nearer the end of the process with the practice of the oral component.

In science we are working on electricity. Students typically find this unit interesting, as there is lots of hands on opportunities to explore how electricity works in a safe way.

Thanks to those of you who have returned tests, rubrics and ski forms recently. For anyone wishing to join us on the ski trip, please do so. I believe there is some cost for the rentals and lunch. Curling forms will come home soon for our curling trip in February.

This will be my final blog of 2011!

Students are doing an excellent job of staying focused and productive this week.... not an easy task with the holidays so close! We have finally finished writing our DARE reports and most students have read them to the class. A few students have been chosen by Constable Paul to read their reports at the graduation tomorrow. Hopefully many of you are able to take an afternoon and join us at this very busy time of year.

Our Explorer unit is also complete this week with our test and notebook completion. Ask your child about the simulation we have been doing.... it is sort of a role-playing activity where we are on board an explorer ship in the 16th century, and having some of the experiences they might have had. So far, no one has been lost on the voyage!! Although we have had stormy seas, threats of mutiny and have met with some natives!! Once complete, students will be able to bring home their Explorer logs so you can get a better idea of what we have been doing.

Please try to have the tests and rubrics that have gone home this week signed and returned by Friday. Thanks if you have already done so.

We have decided to have a celebration Friday afternoon with board games and snacks. If it is possible (and not an extra trip to the store!!), please send a snack to share and a fun game that several students can play together on Friday. I will provide drinks for the students.

Have a safe and healthy holiday season and all the best for 2012!!

Wow! The First Nations projects were quite impressive! Students took great pride in their hard work when sharing their models, posters, duotangs and knowledge of their researched tribe. Thanks for your assistance, encouragement and patience during this endeavour. We have placed most of the models on display in the school library to share with the rest of the school. If your child's project is too large to transport on the bus, please stop in and pick it up in the library the next time you are in the building.

Perhaps that will be at our DARE graduation which is coming up on December 22nd. Look in the backpack for your personal invitation, designed by a student in our class. Prior to graduating, all students will write a report on what they have learned in this program. I am using this as a writing assignment, so all work will be done at school.

We are completing our measurement unit in math and will have a quiz next Thursday. Please sign and return data management tests if you have not already done so.

We are also completing our myth unit in reading. Next, we will be reading biographies in relation to our Explorer unit.

Thanks for your continued support in checking the agendas for important information and dates and helping your child to be prepared for school each day.

Thanks to everyone who was able to make it last week to our parent-teacher meetings. It is important to be able to have discussions around student achievement and especially to work together to achieve goals that students have set. I am contacting families who were not able to attend a time last week to have these discussions at a later time, or over the phone.

Students are bringing home Social Studies tests for signatures this week. Overall, results were very positive. Hopefully students are well on their way to finishing their home portions of their First Nations projects which include a 3 d model showing some aspect(s) of their tribe's life and a duotang or poster showing several aspects of their researched information, including a map. These are due Monday Dec. 5th. We are continuing to work on their multi-paragraph reports in class.

We will be having a data management test next Tuesday, Nov 29th. This will cover collecting, organizing, displaying and interpreting data using a variety of graph types and finding the median and mean of a set of numbers.

It is also time for a word wall test, which is a review test of the weekly words sent home in the agenda each Monday. This will take place this Friday, Nov. 25th.

Students are very excited about our first Grade 6 7 8 dance of the year. The theme is hat day, so if students wear a hat, they will get into the dance for $1, no hat, $2. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Students not wishing to go to the dance can go to the games room as an option.

Please ensure your child has both indoor and outdoor footwear at school. It is expected they do not wear the same shoes outside and in the class. As the weather is turning colder, students should also have proper coats, hats and mitts. A set of clothes for phys ed class could be kept at school as students should not be wearing jeans to gym class on days 1 and 4.

I apologize for not posting a blog sooner...hopefully the agenda notes have been enough to keep you up to date on happenings in room 7. On that note, please check your child's agenda frequently for important reminders, homework expectations and due dates. Even though a signature is not required on a daily basis, I have noticed that a few students are not taking the opportunity provided each day to write down what is on the classroom agenda board. Consequently, some students have not had assignments completed in a timely manner, or have needed extra time to return tests, rubrics, etc. These skills are part of the learning skills on the provincial report card and are part of my overall evaluation.

Thanks to those of you who have signed and returned the several items making the backpack trek these last few weeks....science and math tests, DARE and Go Girls permission forms, social studies project outlines, parent interview requests.... If these items don't sound familiar, or you have not seen them yet, please ask your child why not.

I am attempting to integrate our social studies unit as much as possible, therefore not only are we learning about Canada's First Nations through research, we are reading and summarizing myths related to aboriginal cultures, writing First Nations reports and creating a variety of First Nations style art and artifacts.

Progress report cards come home this Thursday. Please return the envelope and tear off portion of the report as soon as possible. I look forward to discussing your child's progress and next steps with each of you next week during our interview times.

Until next week,

Our classroom looks like something from Star Trek!! The students have been working hard on their group planet projects and should be ready to present today. My goal is that we have each group present their information today, so we can wrap up this unit before the weekend. Thanks so much for providing your child with the extra supplies they wanted to use in their projects.

We will begin a social studies unit on Monday on Canada's First Nations. The students typically enjoy this unit. It will culminate in another project, this one individual, and some of that work will need to be completed at home.

The results for the recent math test on patterning were strong overall. We are about half way through our unit on place value and will be talking about decimals next week. Check the agenda next week for a test date. If you have not returned either the science or math tests that came home in agendas, please do so. Moon logs were also due yesterday.

Our new D.A.R.E. officer, Paul Nancekivell, will be starting up the DARE program this morning. It is a wonderful program that teaches students the negative impact of alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse. It also includes a very important component about peer relationships and peer pressure that is relevant to our students. More information will come home in the backpacks on this program.

Our class is also going to be working on hosting our school's Remebrance Day assembly which will be held in the gym on November 11th. Please come if you have a chance.

A reminder that we have our unit patterning test tomorrow. Any students not finished their review questions, or who want a little more practice with text book questions have been encouraged to bring home their books tonight. Any questions from the Chapter 1 skills bank or problem bank would be beneficial. We will start our new unit of place value, large and small numbers next week.

Students should also be going over hilighted words from their WWW lists in preparation for tomorrow's review test. They will be tested on 40 random words from the lists over the past 4 weeks. All lists should be found in the agenda.

Students are nearing completion of their research for their group planet projects. They are welcome to gather more info at home, but it is not required. Next week they will be preparing their projects in class. Your child may come home with a request for an item or 2 to bring to school to complete their project. I will supply as much of the materials as I can from our classroom supply, but some students may want materials such as a large cardboard box, styrofoam balls (dollar store item), etc.

Our science test will be next Friday, Oct. 14th. Students will be asked to prepare a "Proof of Study" using their notebook information. We will begin this in class, but students may need to add information as a homework task. If they do a thorough proof of study and then read it over a few times, they will be well prepared for the test. They are not allowed to bring the proof to the test, however I will be asking for it to be handed in. It will become a part of their overall notebook mark. The notebook will also be collected and marked for completion. Please check the back of the notebook for the rubrics I have included, which clearly explain the expectations for the notebook, project and moon log.

Students seem to be enjoying logging the phases of the moon. We will have completed the monthly cycle by October 19th, at which time I will ask students to hand in completed moon logs. The weather has really been cooperating this week, so students should have had lots of opportunity to get a first hand look at the phases on these clear evenings.

I hope everyone enjoys the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. Get out and enjoy the incredible weather...it will be winter before we know it!

Wow! Where did September go? Things are humming right along in Room 7, Grade 6.

We are moving right along with our non-fiction reading unit. Students are able to summarize using the text features present and are working on being able to pull out the main idea in a piece of writing. We are connecting that to our writing by working on writing information paragraphs with appropriate organization.

We will have a review test of the WWW words we have been working on over the last 4 weeks next Friday, Oct. 7th. Students should review the hilighted words from each week's list which can be found in their agendas.

In math, we are almost ready for our unit test on patterning; students should be able to represent and extend patterns in a chart and graph and be able to use a pattern rule to extend that pattern. We have set Friday, October 7th as our test date. Students will be working on the last couple of lessons and review before that date. Please sign and return the quiz that went home this week if you haven't already done so.

Students seem keen to be logging the phases of the moon. We will soon be able to see it in the night sky again as we move towards the first quarter. We have also begun group research projects on a planet selected by each student. They will conduct the research in groups and then create a group project to teach the rest of the class what they have learned. Most of the work will be done in class, but students wishing to do some extra research at home are encouraged (but not requred) to do so. Students can expect to be setting a date in the next 2 weeks for their unit test on Space. Watch the agendas for that info.

Finally, thanks to those parents involved in helping me get the junior soccer team to and from the tournament on Wed. The kids had a great day.

Room 7 is becoming a very busy place as we are off and running with many of our programs. This week students will be completing their first CASI reading assessment for the year. They are quite familiar with this assessment tool which is used board wide from Grade 4 to Grade 8. The students will be asked to independently read grade level materials and then answer 8 questions based on the text. No worries at home, as there is not really any way for students to prepare ahead of time.

On Friday, I will be giving a short quiz to the class on number patterns, to see how they are mastering the skills expected in our patterning unit. They will also be asked to complete 2-3 mad minute pages as homework this week. Check the agenda for assigned pages.

Our first week of Working With Words went well with most students completing their activities on time. A new list will be going home in agendas today. The hilighted words are words your child had difficulty with today and they should use these words as often as possible when completing their 5 activities. Ample time is given in class to do the activities, but some students will have to do some of this for homework. Activities are due Friday.

We are also beginning our moon log assignment this week as part of our science unit on Space. Please check the agenda for an outline of the moon log expectations. I have included a sample rubric. Please sign the sheet once read and have your child bring it in to show me. I will then give the sheet back so you have it on hand to revisit over the next 4 weeks.

It was nice meeting or getting reaquainted with several families at the barbeque last week. Hopefully I get a chance for a face to face "hello" with those of you I have not chatted with yet, in the near future.

Welcome to my blog! I will try to update this every few weeks, or even more often during the busier times of the year. I will let you know through the agenda when I have updated the blog.

I wanted to give you a brief outline of some of our subject areas for the next month or two.

In language we are working on reading and summarizing non-fiction materials, reviewing parts of speech and paragraph writing.

In math we are currently working on a patterning and algebra unit. Following that we will work on place value-large and small numbers. I like to have small impromtu quizzes to check for understanding and then a bigger unit test at the end of each unit. Notice will be given prior to the unit tests through the agenda and this blog.

We have begun our science unit on Space. This is a really interesting unit for the kids. We will be tracking the moon phases for one month starting very soon. Later in the unit, students will work in small groups to create an in-class project to teach their classmates about a chosen planet. Watch in the agenda for details.

Currently we have Phys. Ed. on days 2 and 5 (Mondays and Wednesdays for now). We are working on running and soccer skills for the next few weeks.

The much anticipated DARE program for Grade 6 students usually begins around Thanksgiving. This very important 10 week program teaches students about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol and drug use and how to foster healthy peer relationships.

I look forward to meeting or reaquainting with you at the barbeque later in the week. Hopefully you are able to make it! Let's hope this lovely weather sticks around for it!

Wow! May and June have been very busy months! My sincere apologies for not making an entry in so long. Hopefully you have not felt uninformed with all that has been going on at East Gary and in Portable 9!

Students did a great job of working hard and sitting for long periods of time during EQAO. Results will be sent out early next fall.

We have wrapped up most units now and students have brought home the larger marked assignments and tests for signatures. Thanks very much for the time you have taken over the year to look at these assignments and sign them. It is an important method of communicating to you how your son or daughter is doing on a frequent basis. If you have any of these at home still, or perhaps in the bottom of a backpack, please sign and send them in as soon as possible. A very large folder will be coming home soon with all of these assignments, and more. I have kept their work samples on file, but now it is time to send them home. It is interesting to see their progress over the year...which is impressive!

We had the pleasure of having one of our parents Captain Brent Everson in the class today sharing some of his vast knowledge of flight and airplanes. The students were very respectful and engaged during the presentation. Thanks Captain Brent!!

Tomorrow students moving on to Montgomery Village Public School will have an opportunity to visit and meet some of their future classmates while getting a tour of the school. Those students who are here next year will spend some time with Ms. Robinson's class tomorrow afternoon.

Report cards will come home Monday, June 27th. Please return page 4 if possible before the 30th.

As this will probably be my last blog of the year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every student and family for their hard work, support, and encouragement to allow each student to achieve to their fullest potential over the year. It has been a great year with many goals set and achieved. Everyone has earned a well deserved rest over the summer.

Have a safe one!

May is flying by quickly! We are busy in the classroom finishing units and beginning to prepare for the EQAO test which we will be writing from Monday May 30th to Thursday June 2nd. The test consists of 6 sections (4 language and 2 math) that take approximately one hour each. We plan on spreading that out over 4 days, completing 1 section the first day, 2 on the next 2 days and 1 on the final day. The best way for your child to feel prepared is to get a good night's sleep each night, have a good breakfast each morning, and be prepared to try their best. We try to build in fun activities during the non test portions of the day, such as extra gym and outdoor time.

Next week we will begin a specific homework program to review and consolidate some math skills for students. Please check to see that your child completes at least one page each night. It is fine to work ahead, but not to fall behind. Much of the learning (or review) comes during the take-up time, so students need to have given each page a try before that. They also need to be sure the booklet is at school each day to benefit fully from those discussions.

Students should be well on their way to finishing reading their novel for their "book in a box" book report. The rough copy, which needs to include a plot summary, character information, and some personal connections (favourite part, favourite character...), needs to be completed and handed in by May 27th. I will show the students an example of a box next week, so they can begin the good copy early if they choose. Please refer to the outline provided and signed in April. These have been returned and your child should know where it is.

Students had a fun time swimming last week. Please continue to remind them to bring a suit and towel on the next 4 Mondays. We don't swim the week after the long weekend.

Those parents who wish to join us this Tuesday at Laurelwoods for the play, please either be at the school by 8:45. Or you can drive on your own. The play begins at 9:30 and last about an hour.

Have a great weekend!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing Easter weekend. Thanks to those of you who helped/reminded your child to complete their advertising booklet and commercial assignment to hand in this week. There are a few students left to complete and hand these in on Wednesday.

We have started a short unit in math on 3 dimensional shapes, and measuring their surface area and volume. Next week we will work on fractions, decimals, ratio and percent. The unit focuses on how these kinds of numbers relate to each other, which is why they are all together. For example 3/4 = 0.75 = 3 to 4 = 75%. We will have brief quizzes at the end of each unit, rather than the larger unit tests that we normally have. Please keep checking the agenda to see those dates. Students will also be bringing home more math homework in the coming weeks to help consolidate the concepts we are working on in class. Thanks in advance for whatever support your child may need at home.

In our Social Studies Trading Partners unit, we are currently studying Japan. This is a timely unit with all the issues currently facing Japan. We are having wonderful discussions in class as we take a close look at this important Canadian trade partner. A unit test will be coming up within 2 weeks. Once again students will be given the opportunity to create a 2 sided crib note they can use during the test.

Students should be well on their way to finishing their book report novels in the next couple of weeks. Please remind your child to make notes on the characters and plot as they read. The follow up activities will be much easier for them if this step is completed.

Thanks to those of you who have sent back swimming permission forms. If you have not yet had the chance, please do so a.s.a.p. as money has to be in to the office by the end of this week at the latest. Our first swim date is Monday, May 9th, which is less than 2 weeks away!

I think the students are happy to be finished with our multiplication and division unit....long division is tricky for most students. Many of them can use at least one strategy fairly successfully. One way to be more successful with this is to know your multiplication facts, and that takes practice! Unit tests went home Monday for signatures. If you could check these over, sign them and return them in a timely manner, it would be appreciated. We are now working on area, and they are able to use calculators!! This is a short unit, so students can expect a quiz by the end of next week.

Electricity tests have also been sent home for signatures, as well as notebook rubrics. Please send these back asap as well. We have switched to Social Studies, where students will be learning about Canada's trading partners.

I am sending home a new homework assignment related to our media literacy unit on advertising. A focus of this unit is to make kids aware of different techniques advertisers use to make the public buy their products, and how we can be informed viewers and consumers. Students need to find some magazine or newspaper advertisements and use these to fill in a chart. They are doing similar activities in class, so they will be familiar with the activities. This will be due Monday, April 18th. I will be assigning a television commercial homework activity next week with a similar theme. Thanks in advance of your support to have these assignments completed and returned to school by the due dates.

Students should be well on their way with reading their novels for our book reports due later in May. As they read each chapter, they should be taking brief notes on the plot and characters in the book. All students should have their book report outline (blue page) to refer to during their reading.

Forms for swimming will be in backpacks in the near future.... our class dates are from the middle of May to the middle of June. It is hoped that all students will participate in the program as part of physical education, but also as an important life skill. Fergus offers a great program where kids are placed in ability groups and receive instruction at their skill level. It is a cheaper alternative to out of school swim lessons, and it's fun!

Happy Easter to all East Gary families!

What a crazy weather week! The kids are wanting to wear shorts, when they still need snow boots!! Let's hope spring truly arrives soon!

We have officially completed our class novel study this week. Some students will need to write the test, or finish some poetry early next week. We plan to watch the movie, Tuck Everlasting and students will complete a compare/contrast between the book and the movie.

We will begin a media unit on advertising next week. Students will read about advertising and then do some writing with advertising as well. We are collecting brochures to use during this unit. Thanks to those of you who have sent some in already!

Our science unit on Electricity is wrapping up as well and we should be ready for a unit test soon. I have tentatively scheduled this for next Friday, Apr. 1st. Students will be responsible for completing a proof of study, which we will start in class, but will be finished for homework. They also need to complete their title pages by test day.

Several students are still struggling with multiplication of larger numbers, and this will impact their success when it comes to dividing. We will be working on that in class next week and have a unit test early the following week.

I will send home their book report outline next week and students can then begin reading a novel that has been pre-approved by me.

Oh my! I have not blogged in a while! Sorry about that! Hopefully everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing March Break. I always find the weeks and months following this break fly by, as we begin to prepare for our "push" towards E.Q.A.O. There are many things to cover before the end of the year in Grade 6, and there always seems to be so many other school wide activities during the spring months.

Our novel study is wrapping up this week. We will finish the novel tomorrow and the unit test will be this Friday. The best way for students to be prepared is to read over their plot summary and character traits charts which they have been developing during the unit. Completed notebooks will also be due Friday. I think they have really enjoyed getting to know the Tuck family! If you have not already done so, please ask your son or daughter about this unique story.

Students will work on a media unit for reading and writing next. We will look at effective and ineffective advertising techniques. This unit will culminate in the students creating their own bruchures to advertise either a real or fictional place. If you have any brochures at home or in your workplace that would be suitable for us to use as examples, please send them in.

We are working on multiplication and division in math right now. The students have looked at a few different strategies to multiply large numbers. Many students can effectively use one or more strategies, but some students continue to struggle. A way to help at home is to continue to push those one digit multiplication facts and to ask your child to show you the different strategies to see which one works best for them.

In science, we have begun our electricity experiments with bulbs and batteries. Students will explore ways to make a simple circuit, and both series and parallel circuits. Safety is stressed during each and every lesson.

Look for book report assignments to come home in the next few weeks. This will be an at home project, but will not be due for several weeks yet. I would prefer that students not begin reading yet, as I have some criteria for them to follow in choosing and reading the book. More info will come home shortly.

We are off and running with a few new units this week. Students are really enjoying our class novel study, "Tuck Everlasting". They may have the odd homework assignment, but most of the work is being done in class. In writing, we are working on injecting "voice" or emotion into our writing. Our school wide letter writing program has begun. Students are very excited to be able to write and receive letters from friends around the school. Our class is partnered with Mrs. Stephenson's grade 1/2 class.

We have just begun our Electricity unit in science. This will be a fun one, as there will be lots of opportunities for "hands on" activities, such as building circuits with bulbs and batteries.

Our unit math test on adding and subtracting both large numbers and decimals is this Friday. Students seem to have a good handle on adding with regrouping, but some still struggle with the subtracting. We have our final review in class tomorrow and students should be bringing home their textbooks to do some test prep at home. Next, we will move into a unit on area.

Report cards come home this Friday. Please take the time to discuss these with your children and return the final page in the envelopes next week.

Student Council has organized a dance for this Friday afternoon. I believe admission is $1 and pop and chips will again be sold.

Our next and final curling date is next Friday, Feb. 25th. The kids had a great time last week.

What a crazy week! With the P.D. day, no bus day, school speech competition and theatre trip, we didn't spend much time in the classroom! We did manage to accomplish some things though. Almost everyone has finished their speech in class. Once everyone has presented, a rubric will come home for you to sign. Overall they were done very well. I think the students are glad to have that assignment behind them!

Next week we have our first curling date, Friday from 9:30 to 10:30. Any parents who are available, you can meet us at the school at 9:00 or at the Fergus curling club at 9:20. Every curler needs a large milk bag (for a slider) and clean running shoes.

Our Kraft Dinner lunch will be served on Wednesday of next week. Everyone needs a bowl, fork and plastic bag to carry home the dirty dishes. We are still accepting donations if you have not done so yet!

We will be getiing back into the routines of WWW and Mad Minute next week as well.

I have spoken to several students this week about things being left at home, forgotten at home, incomplete, etc... We all had a quick review of how they should be using their agendas. Each day we set aside time to fill in the agendas, which should be copied from my board. If the agenda is to be used effectively, students must also use them at home. That is they need to be taken out of their backpack, opened and read. That way, the reminders we place in the agenda are useful to you at home. I don't expect parents to sign, but please make sure you are checking the agenda at least a few times a week to keep on top of things. I also am trying to instill in the students that it is their responsibility to use their agenda, not their parents!!

Here is an update to what is happening in Portable 9! Ms. Sidey has continued to do a fantastic job covering for me in the class. Students completed a geometry test last week, which will be coming home soon for a signature. We are now working on addition and subtraction, multiplication and division.

Students are also preparing this week for a social studies test coming up this Friday. They have had the opportunity to create a crib note, one page front and back with jot notes on the various explorers studied. This crib note can be used during the test. If your child has not completed this crib note, please ensure it is complete and at school this Friday. Their social studies notebook also needs to be complete....title page should be coloured and have various labels added to demonstrate their learning during the unit.

Speeches are nearing completion and students are bringing them home this week to put on cue cards and practice for their oral presentations. Memorization is not necessary, however students should be very familiar with the content of their speech and should not have to read it word for word. Please give them suggestions on how to best present their speech, by using suitable expression, tone and volume to engage the listener. Any student wanting to be considered for the school competition next Thursday, Feb. 3rd needs to be ready to present in class this Friday, or Monday at the very latest. Those not interested in the school competition, have until next Friday to present in class.

Our next science unit will be on electricity. Students will be involved in a variety of hands on activities with batteries and bulbs, studying how electricity and simple circuits work.

Thanks to those parents who have returned curling and theatre trip forms. Please return these as soon as possible if you have not already done so. February is going to be a busy month!

I so appreciated the get well cards and wishes I received from the class last week. I am really looking forward to getting back into the classroom later this week. It will be a challenge as I am still relying on crutches to get around, and the winter weather makes access to the portable less than ideal. I am so proud of the students and the wonderful things I am hearing from Ms Sidey. They have really stepped up during this unexpected situation!

Hello Everyone!

I apologize for not posting sooner. As I am sure you know, I am off right now with an ankle injury. I am having difficulty with my mobility, but hope to be back at school soon.

Ms. Sidey is doing a fabulous job as my replacement in the classroom. I understand the students had a great ski day last Friday. Thanks so much to the parents who were able to join the class for a great day in the snow! We will also be curling and going to Theatre Orangeville in February, so look for those forms coming home in backpacks soon.

Students are currently working on their speeches in class. Most should be completing their rough drafts and be starting to revise and edit with support in class. Students will bring home good copies of their speeches near the end of this week, or early next week. They will need to put their speeches, or parts of them, on cue cards and begin to practice their oral presentations. You can assist them by listening and offering suggestions on such things as tone, expression and volume. Students should be aiming for speeches around 3 to 5 minutes in length. Dates for class presentations are January 28th to Feb 4th. The school competition has tentatively been scheduled for Feb. 3rd.

Students are also currently wrapping up units on geometry and social studies and will have unit tests in these subjects next week. Specific dates will be set soon, so watch for these in the agenda.

I will try to continue updating this blog as new information arises.

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful, relaxing holiday season. The students seem well rested and ready for a busy winter term. We have begun our unit on geometry. Students are working on measuring angles using protractors and will be constructing various polygons based on specific measurements. We will have a few small quizzes during the unit and a unit test within 2 weeks from now. Specific dates will come home in the agenda.

In social studies, as part of our Explorers unit, we will be doing a simulation, which is like a role play. Over the next few weeks, students will "become" explorers on a ship headed for the "New World". They will encounter a variety of situations that, as a group they will have to make decisions on. These decisions will in turn have certain consequences. Let's hope everyone is able to "survive" their voyage!

Students should be thinking about possible speech topics that we will be writing over the next several weeks. Topics should be chosen based on current knowledge students have, as well as a strong interest. If they are not that interested in a topic, they will have a difficult time making their audience interested in listening to them. More details will come home in an outline soon.

Thanks to those parents who have volunteered to join us for a day of cross country skiing next Friday, Jan. 14th. All are welcome! Please send in your payment which covers your lunch and rental before next Friday. Also please let me know if you are joining us on the bus or if you are meeting us at Mansfield. We will leave shortly before 9 a.m. and return in time for buses at the end of the day.

Here it is, my last blog of the year 2010! Can you believe it is almost Christmas?

Students brought home math quizzes yesterday to be signed and returned. If you did not return it today, please do so early in the new year. We are still looking for signed French tests as well.

Thanks to those families who were able to return the ski forms before the holidays. We need those returned asap as well, as the trip is coming up quickly after the break. If you are able to join us on Jan. 14th for a day of cross country skiing, please let me know on the permission form. The cost is reduced for adult volunteers.

Thanks to those people who brought in treats to share today....the students really enjoyed them. And I am overwhelmed by all the generous and thoughtful gifts I received today. Thank you.

Finally, I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season to enjoy with family and friends. See you in the new year!

The First Nations projects were awesome! I am keeping the posters and duotangs for a few more days, but students should have brought home their 3 d models by now. If not, please remind them to do so asap. Unfortunately there is no room for them to be displayed here. Rubrics went home in the agendas today. Please sign and return them to me.

Permission forms for cross country skiing also went home today. We are scheduled to ski at Mansfield on January 14th. We are looking for volunteers again this year. It is a great day and the hot lunch is a nice treat after all the exercise!

We got lucky this week with the snowy weather happening everywhere but here. Please ensure your child is wearing appropriate outdoor clothing to school...even though we don't have much snow yet, the field is frozen and the wind is cold.

Thanks,

Wow! It's December already!? Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedules to meet with me last week. School-home communication is extremely important if students are to achieve to the best of their potential. If you have not already sent back your report card envelope, please do so asap.

Students should be putting the finishing touches on their First Nations projects this week. I have asked them to wait and bring them to school on Friday, when we will have made some space in the classroom to display them. Students will have an opportunity to share their projects informally, in small groups. They will be returned home at some point next week. Thanks again for all your support with the projects, from purchasing materials, to encouraging your child to use their creative energy.

Students have brought home their social studies and data management tests for parent signatures. Please return these to school asap. Overall the scores were quite strong....students were prepared and "knew their stuff"!

You should have received an invitation to our DARE graduation ceremony scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 16th at 2 pm. Students will be writing their DARE reports... some of it at school and some at home.... and need to be prepared to present these in class next Thursday with Officer Buck. A few students will then be invited to share their reports at the graduation.

Thanks for your generous donations to our class baskets....they should be lovely!

We will be continuing with Social Studies, studying European Explorers. In math we will be starting a measurement unit next week which should wrap up by the holidays.

Thanks so much for your donations to our "Fingers and Toes" theme baskets. We have several lovely things already! If you still plan on contributing, please send in the items soon...basket wrapping starts early next week.

I am looking forward to seeing each of you to discuss the progress reports either tomorrow evening or Friday. Please let the office know if you are unable to keep your appointment.

Please return the report envelope and the tear-off section of page 2 of the report.

Thanks to everyone who was able to juggle their day and join us for our Remembrance Day assembly this morning. The students did a fantastic job of presenting stories, poems and explanations of this important and solemn day.

The students are looking forward to tomorrow's dance... the first of the year. Admission is $1 if dressed as a twin/triplet or $2 if not. Pop ($1) and chips ($0.50) will be sold. Students not wishing to attend the dance can go to the games room and still purchase the pop and chips.

Students are currently in the process of choosing a First Nations group to research and then create a project on. We will begin research next week and projects can be started any time after that. A note with specific details and expectations on the project will come home next week.

Our classroom theme for the silent auction baskets this year is "Fingers and Toes". Any items related to these body parts will be graciously accepted. Suggestions include cozy socks or slippers, mitts, hand cream, foot lotion, nail polish... Baskets will be available to bid on during our Breakfast with Santa on Sat. Dec. 4th.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable, if chilly Hallowe'en! Thanks for sending in treats and board games last Friday....the students seemed to really enjoy their little celebration. I am asking the students to please limit the number of treats in their lunch bags to 2-3 per day....and nothing with nuts, please!

A reminder of the place value test coming up this Thursday....students should be able to read, write, expand, compare and order large numbers and decimals. We are reviewing the chapter in class. Students who don't finish the class work, should be taking the text home. If you want your child to do some extra practice before Thursday, be sure to remind them to bring the textbook home. Any questions from the chapter review section would be suitable. Our next unit is on data management.

Our class is hosting this year's Remembrance Day assembly next Thursday, Nov. 11th. If you are able to come, please join us. The assembly should begin at 10:00 sharp, so come a little earlier if you want a seat!!

Looking forward to chatting with you at interview time closer to the end of the month!

Thanks to everyone who was able to see, sign and return science and math tests last night. I made an error on adding up the math test... it was actually out of 50 instead of 60. Students had their marks readjusted as necessary and in some cases their grades went up.

We will have our place value unit test next week. Check agendas for the exact date....once students have demonstrated their understanding of decimals, they will be ready for the test.

We will be having a small Hallowe'en celebration on Friday afternoon. If you wish, you may send in nut-free snacks for your child to share with classmates. Thanks in advance if you are able to contribute.

Don't forget the school clothing orders on sale until November 2nd. It is a good way for students to have the appropriate clothing for phys. ed. class.

Enjoy your Hallowe'en!!

We are wrapping up our science unit on space and our unit test will be next Friday, Oct. 22nd. Students will need to have their notebooks complete as well as a completed "proof of study" that I will begin to prepare with them in class early next week.
