]]>Sunday, September 16th there are two great events for children check-out: Telling Tales at Westfield Village in Rockton, Ontario and Eden Mills Writer’s Festival. Both events will be hosting a wide range of children’s authors. At Westfield Village you can hear Kevin Sylvester read from his Neil Flambe series, Deborah Ellis describe her new book Kids of Kabul, Annika Dunklee who is the author of My name is Elizabeth and many others. In Eden Mills you can visit with Helaine Becker who is the author of A Porcupine in a Pine Tree, Susan Glickman, Lizann Flatt and more. We cannot post lists anymore due to privacy . Instead, we will do the following:
1. Teachers will be at the back of the school. They will be holding up signs with their name and grade on it. All teachers of a certain grade will meet together.
2. When the bell goes, teachers will call out the names of the students in their class and take them into the school. (If it rains, we will do this in the gym).
3. There will be many teachers on the yard to help lost students. Nobody will be left on the yard!
We have made some significant changes to the bus and student drop-off routines. Goodwin Drive is now designated as our student drop-off zone and parent parking. All busses will now drop off students at the Hall Street entrance. There will be more information included in the first day newsletter.
If you have been around the school today or yesterday you will have noticed that there is something going on! Thanks to our amazing School Council a play structure is going in this week! Please remind your kids to stay off until they have heard from the school that it is safe to use. We are excited!

We have an opportunity, with support from Public Health, to create a "healthier school community". To do this, we will form a committee representing staff, students, parents and community to assess the health of our school. We will identify strengths as well as areas for improvement, set goals and implement actions that will support these goals.
We will be surveying parents in September to help us to identify our strengths and needs. On Monday, June 11 at 3:30, we will hold an information meeting with Glen Rogers, from Public Health. If you are interested in attending this initial meeting, please give Mrs. Soule a call at the school (ext. 224).

What a week it has been! On Monday, we had a kick-off assembly with a guest speaker (Olympic silver medalist in the 1996 Olympics). Valerie Hould-Marchand inspired the students with her presentation. We have also had guest readers this week ( parents, the Guelph Storm and visitors from RBC). The book mobile is here today.
Next week promises to be just as exciting. Monday is a holiday, but on Tuesday we have a school-wide pajama day and read. The entire school will be reading from 9:00-9:25. On Tuesday, there will be a junior book swap (please send in a couple of books that are in good condition and your child can take one in return ). Our early bird draw is Wednesday ( Box seats at a Storm Game). On Thursday, parents are invited into the school again for a read and lunch with their children ( 1:10-1:30). Please join us for this if you can. We will end the week with an intermediate poetry cafe.
Once again- if every child raises just $20.00 we can raise $10 000 all of which will come directly to the school!

During the past few days we had our first fire drill of the year (only five more to go), Open House and we had a wonderful Terry Fox Walk which raised over two-thousand dollars for cancer research. That is absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for your support.
Next week, our intermediate students are learning to Zumba, School Council meets (please join us) and there is a Provincial Election.

We are now into our seventh day of school and it seems as though we never left! Students are settled into their rooms (any changes were made yesterday) and staff feel as though they know their students well. Thanks to all of you for your help in returning forms (please do so if you haven't), using the drop-off area (instead of the parking lot) and for all of the other things you do every day to help make Westminster a great place to be.
Just a reminder that our fall Open House will take place on Thursday September 29th. We hope you can drop by to say hello and visit your child's classroom. The school will open at 6:00 and we hope to wrap up by 7:30 pm.
The Terry Fox Run is coming up (you will get information). Every class will walk that day. Donations (Toonies for Terry) are welcome, but certainly not mandatory.

]]>As always, the summer has flown by. Whenever I see one of our students on the streets or around town, I can tell that two months have passed as they have gotten taller. Most people I have talked to have really enjoyed their summer!
Just a reminder that school starts on September 6th. All students (except for kindergartens) will meet on the tarmac at the back of the school. Class lists will be up for students to look at and find their teachers. There will be lots of help outside, so don't worry about your child getting lost. Once the bell goes, staff will gather up any students who have not found their way to class.
Please don't call the school and request a change of class for your child. Teachers have put a lot of thought into placements, and have placed your child in the class and with the teacher that they think is best. Also remember, that because of numbers, things can change and classes may change after the first week. While students often come home upset that they weren't placed with a friend, or because they were moved, most often it only takes a few days and they are happy where they are.
Enjoy the last few weeks with your children. We will see you soon!

It's the first week of holidays and I am sure that all of our students are enjoying their vacation. The weather has been amazing and it actually feels like summer!
Thanks again to all of our parents and students for making our first year successful. Before you know it, we will be up and running again! The first day of school is September 6. Class lists will be posted at the back of the school and teachers will be outside to help direct students to their teachers. When the bell goes at 8:45 teachers will take students to the correct classroom.
If you are planning on attending Westminster in the fall, but haven't yet registered, registration will take place on Wednesday August 31, from 9-pm.

]]>Are you looking for a way to get involved in your child’s school? Do you have a talent or area of interest to share? Want to contribute to your school community? School Council is made up of interested parents and school staff who work together to enhance the school community and provide a rich learning and growing experience for our children.
School Council membership is determined in September of the school year but new parents are welcome at any time. A parent can attend council at any time without being a formal council member. Meetings are typically held on first Monday of each month from 6:45-8:00 pm in the staff lounge. If you have questions regarding School Council please contact anyone on the executive listed below. If your child is a safety patrol, they have been invited to a skating party on January 15th. There is a permission slip that they will need to take with them should they be able to go. They have been asked to pick this up at the office.
It is sad for our school, but we have had to say goodbye to Madame Harrison as she has been given a contract french job in Harriston. We wish her all the best.
We also hope that Mrs. Lebert recovers soon from her broken leg. We miss her and hope that she returns at the end of the month.

First of all- thank you all for your generous donations to our Giving Tree and food for the Food Bank. We were able to fill 64 boxes! Because of that, Mrs. Newman, staff and students will be able to wear their PJ's next week (day to be announced) and watch a movie! Stay tuned for more information on this.
Next week is the final week of school, and to celebrate the season will be having 3 holiday assemblies: Wednesday at 9:15 a.m., Thursday at 9:15 a.m. and Friday at 2:00 p.m. Parents are welcome to join us at any or all of the celebrations.

School Council has booked the University of Guelph Skating Rink for December 20th at 5:30pm. We will have around an hour to skate and visit with other people. We hope that many of our students and families can join us to celebrate the season. Mark it on your calendar!
]]>After much discussion with staff, we have decided to allow students to wear costumes to school on Friday October 29th. This means that on Friday, we will allow students to wear costumes and make-up to school. They may not, under any circumstances wear anything violent, nor may they bring any type of weapon with them to school. They may not wear masks. Anyone not following these guidelines will be asked to change into their regular clothes.
Students will be asked to come to school with their make-up and costumes on. They can either come with their costumes on top of their clothes or come with their costumes on. They will not be given time to go into the washroom and change.
For the most part, it will be a typical day of learning, but each class will likely do some fun activities at some point during the day. Individual teachers will let you know if they would like some treats to be sent to school. Primary students will also have some activities in the gym, which may include some music.

The Grand Opening of Westminster Woods was held last night and it was a great success. Thank you to all of you who were able to attend. We were really glad to have you there.
Our choir did an outstanding job of singing, our drummers were excellent and our ukelele players played beautifully. The staff were all very proud of our students. Congratulations and well done!
Thanks to all of the teachers and other staff members who came out to help last night. We really have a community of people who believe in helping each other in any and every way possible.
On another note- I'm sure you will hear that the fire trucks were at the school this morning and that we had, "the longest fire drill ever". There was no fire, but the alarms did go off and it has something to do with the water pressure. Everyone was outside for about twenty-five minutes. This is a good reason for students to make sure they are wearing shoes!

We are into the second month of school already and it's been busy. Pizza, sub and milk orders went home two weeks ago and both milk and pizza have already started. Thanks very much to those parents who counted money, sorted orders and to those who came in to help out during the first pizza day. Although it was busy, and there were some students with mixed orders, it went relatively well! Students did not go hungry, nor were they thirsty!
Our School Council Fundraising Committee has been extremely busy. They are committed to running fundraising that is healthy and environmentally friendly. We hope to raise enough money throughout the next couple of years to purchase wonderful playground equipment for your children. Look out for orange and grapefruit orders which should have come home earlier this week.
]]>It was really lovely to see so many students, siblings, parents and grandparents in the library at the Open House. Thank you for coming by, introducing yourselves and for helping support the growth of our library by adopting a book or two. We raised an amazing total of $610.00. All of these funds will go towards building our collection and buying some necessary supplies for the kindergarten library program. Thank you, again, for your support and for celebrating reading with us.
Our grade 1 to grade 7 classes are up and running! The kindergarten classes are very close and will be ready to go very soon. Thank you for your patience. All classes have a weekly library slot where they can return their books and sign out new books. Please ask your child about their book choices and take a moment to sit down with them and read a few pages. In the students’ classrooms and in the library, we will discussing how to select “good fit books” that are just right for your child’s reading level and interests to help them select books.
Thank you, again, for your continued support of our library! It is wonderful to have the students coming and going, lounging on the couches and carpets with books in-hand, and sharing their favourite reads.

On Tuesday, September 28th during our Open House, please visit our library to see our beautiful space, browse our collection and Adopt-a-Book or two.
The Adopt-a-Book initiative is a fundraiser for our library to support the growth of our collection. Here’s how it works:
1. When you enter the library, several books will be on display on the tables. Choose a book (or two) to "adopt".
2. There will be two tables accepting adoption payments. Soft cover books are $5.00 and hardcover books are $10.00.
3. You will be asked to sign a sticker that thanks you for supporting our school library and announces your adoption of the library book. This sticker will be placed in the front of the book that you have chosen and it will go in a bin to be reshelved on Wednesday.
4. The book will stay in our collection with your adoption sticker inside it. Students will sign it in and out and be reminded of your support each time they do so.

We hope that you can join us for the first ever Westminster Woods Open House. The school will be open tomorrow night (Tuesday September 28th ) from 6:30-8:00. Come and have a tour of the school and meet your child's teachers. We are hoping that there will be coffee as well!
Please remember to keep the night of October 20th open for our Grand Opening. The ceremony will run from 7-8 pm.

We hope that all of you will be able to come out to the school Open House which will be held next week , Tuesday September 28 from 6:30-8:00. While this is not a time to have an interview with your child's teacher, it is a time to meet them, see the classroom and visit the rest of the school. We really hope you can make it.

Although we cannot get into the school yet, it looks really good. The floors are in, the walls have been painted and there are even some bulletin boards up. We'll be moving in before we know it.
On August 25, we invite you to join us on a "walk to school" event. We will join our friends at the other new school down the street (St. Ignatius of Loyala) as we walk the neighborhood together. This will be a good opportunity to meet your neighbours and make some "walking to school" connections. Join us afterward in the back field for watermelon. More details to come soon!
School starts on September 7 at 8:45 sharp. We invite your children to join us at the back of the school where class lists will be posted and teachers will be walking around helping students. When the bell rings, teachers will gather their students and head into the school to start the day. There will be many, many teachers outside, so don't worry about your child getting lost. Nobody will be left behind!!!
