Mr. P's class has there first swim date on Monday, May 14th from 12:30pm to 2:30pm.  Please

remember to bring all swimming equipment and towels.  If the students bring change, they will

be allowed to purchase a snack from the vending machines after our lesson has concluded.  There

will only be a minimal amount of time for this, so please remind you son or daughter to change quickly.

Math: -unit test on Friday, April 27th....chapter 9 of the Nelson text....this unit covers addition and subtraction of fractions and it is quite challenging.  Please monitor you child's homework and have them come in for extra help if required when they get off the bus in the morning.

In math, our class has started chapter nine in the text which deals with adding and subtracting fractions.  This is a very difficult unit for some students. Please remind your kids that they may come into the portable at 8:30am...when they get off the bus...for extra help.  I had 7-9 students coming in early for help in algebra and all of them passed their unit test...Bravo!!!  Lets keep that effort up as we only have 10 weeks of school left before the summer break.

My final reminder is for science.  There is only 2-3 weeks left in science which will undoubtedly mean upcoming quizzes and units test...not to mention lab reports.  All of my class should be reviewing their science notes nightly when possible.

1) We are trying to re-schedule the cancelled ski date for March, 8th, 2012 at Mansfield.  As soon as we get confirmation we'll let you know.

2) The pizza day which was cancelled will be made up on March, 7th, 2012.

3) The badminton team (s) (we are taking 2 teams this year) will be playing on March, 7th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Parkinson Centennial PS. in Orangeville (120 Lawrence Ave.) Yes...we can always use drivers!

4) There was no spelling unit this week due to the ski day /  no bus days....ahhhhhhh  Spelling will be a go next week.

Academically:

a) Math: we just finish our integers unit and we are starting into algebra...these are 2 very difficult units so please monitor your kids homework

b) Reading: our big focus this term will be demonstrating understand and applying our acquired knowledge...lots of inferring

c) Writing: we are just finishing our cycle covering letter writing and persuasive writing...

d) Science: your kids are just starting a new unit with Mr.Mead

1) Gr. 7 Speech Booklets and Speech presentations will begin in class January, 24th, 2012.  The students should be working on this nightly.  Students have an option of a 1 minute plus oral presentation of a 3-5 minute speech.

2) Grade 7's final history assignment is a take home test covering the first 5 chapters of the text.  Students may use any

resources at their disposal.  Test booklets are due on January 20th, 2012.

3) Due to the ski day, the grade 7 & 8 pizza will be delivered first break on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012.

4) The final 2 ski days will be January 27th and February 10th, 2012.

5) Swimming for grade 7 and 8 will begin shortly after the conclusion of the ski program as part of phys-ed at East Gary.

6) BIG REMINDER:  Monday, January 23rd, 2012 is a PD day  which means report cards will be heading home the 2nd week of February.

1) The students have begun their 4 week unit on New France.  It will require nightly reading (approx. 5 pages) from the history text (chapters 1-5).  Chapter one was due today.  The completion of each chapter will be followed by a quiz.  The quizzes are generally true and false.  Chapter 2 will be due on Friday and there will be a quiz to accompany the deadline. Every week until the holidays will require 1-2 chapters of reading.  The students are encouraged to make jot notes which will aid them on the quizzes and the final unit test December 22nd.

2) We have started a new 3 week unit in math covering the topic/strand of Data Management.  There will be weekly quizzes on Fridays followed by a unit test Dec. 21st prior to the Winter Break.

3) Skiing trip information will be sent home in the next week or so as our three trips commence shortly after we return to school in January.

4) In January, the students will begin a 4 week unit in Geography which will run until the end of term 1, at which time they will return to science.

5) For those students interested in competing in speech competitions, organizers will be started and sent home over the break.  Those interested in competitions must have a 3-5 minute speech which is persuasive (essay format) in nature.

Cue cards may be used, but only paragraph topics may be written on them and not the entire speech.

Just a couple of reminders of things you could be working on:

1) Grade 8's...your history unit test on New France is coming up on Monday, November the 28th...You should be working on your crib notes and making sure you've read chapters 1-5 in the text.  Focus on the text information and your quizzes. We have not used the handout package in your duotangs and it will not be on the test.  In the text focus on the following:

Chapter 1- Cartier, Champlain, Fur Trade and Early European Settlements

Chapter 2- Fur Trade - Missionaries and Aboriginal Conflicts

Chapter 3- The Royal Government (Intendent, Governor, and Bishop) Talon, Frontenac, Laval

3) Grade 7's .... you test in science will be on Friday or Monday so make sure you are studying!

The rotary switch for geograph, history and science will commence on Tuesday of next week.  The Grade 7's will be starting geography with Mr.P and our first unit will be the 5 Themes of Geographic Inquiry (House Hunting 101). The Grade 8's will be starting science with Mr.P.  The next switch back will not be until the second term in February.

4) Grade 7's .... don't forget about your unit 13 spelling dication Friday and you unit test in math from chapter 2 will also be Friday! (Ratio, Rates, %, decimals and Fractions)....remember...all are just ways to compare information and data....different ways to say the same thing....There is a good studying review on page 75 of the text.

5) This year's downhill ski dates have been tentatively booked at Mansfield. Jan. 13th, 27th, and Feb. 10th. More definate information will follow later

1) The Atom and Bantam track meet date has been changed from May 18th to 25th due to weather.

2) The East Gary Boys Volleyball Team has qualified for the A Pool final on Wednesday the 18th at WSS at 8:15pm. Good luck boys! Come out and cheer if you are accompanied by a parent. Please bring a non-perishible food item as your entry fee.

3) The County track and field meet will take place June 17th with the raindate on June 21st.

4) The grade 7 and 8 students will be taking their Brock Trip June 8th-10th. Please let the school know

if your child will not be at school if they are not participating on the trip.

5) The grade 6 students in our class will be writing their EQAO test the first week of June.

6) Our class has finished their term 2 unit in geography (world markets) and has started history unit on Western Canadian expansion. We will build into this Canadian trading partners to meet the requirements of the grade 6 social studies program. Accordingly, they should be spending some time each night reading from chapters 6-8 in their history text book.

7) History Quiz on Chapter 6 Wednesday, May 18th.

8) The students have just finished a grade 6 and 7 unit in fractions and both groups will be moving into 3d geometry and measurement.

8) Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart is on Thursday, May 19th in the morning.  Dress appropriately for physcial activity!

Just a reminder of couple of reminders of important up-coming events:

1) Santa's breakfast Dec. 4th...plus silent auction

2) Girls Basketball Practice on Monday, December 6th at 7:45am

3) Both the grade 6's and 7's have started a Novel ("Island of the Blue Dolphins")

    to support their learning of descriptive writing and characteristics of fiction.

    For the next 2 weeks they will be required to read 1 chapter per night (approx. 20min)

4) The students in both grades have rotated out of history and into science where they are

    learning about Mixtures and Substances.  They have also made the transition from visual arts to

    drama where they are focussed on the health topic of harrassment.

5) At noon hours on days 1,2 and 4...35 out of the 53 intermediate students have formed, and are

    playing intramural 3 on 3 basketball.  Way to be active Raiders.

6) In math, both grades are focussed on data management in math Chapter 3 of the Nelson texts for

    both grades.

7) Grade 7 parents:  You kids have registered for the Board's new on-line math helper which also involves

                             live access to a tutor between 5:30 and 9:00 on weekdays.  Hope you find it 

                             helpful for those days you can't quite remember those math skills you used many

                             years ago.   

Sorry that there were not posts last week...things were a little crazy!

Just a reminder that Friday is a PD day for interviews.

If you haven't received an interview form from your child, it should have been

included in the envelope with their progress report.  Please remember to return

-If you'd like to see any of your students' tests or assignments please don't hesitate to ask as all are kept on file in order to avoid the "Terrible Test Eater" under the bed that often eats defenseless intermediate students' work...

Sorry about the lack of updates this week do to the

Cross Country Meet that I convened.  Sorry !

For those with students in the band...they will need to have

their instruments at school every day 3 and day 5.  Instruments are

not to be stored at school as it is tough to practice without your instrument...it's also an

insurance issue.

All of your kids will be concluding their first geography unit of term 1 on Wednesday with

a Unit Test.  They are to be working on their Crib Notes/Study Sheet which they will be allowed

to use during the test.  The Crib Note is also worth 10 marks towards their geography total.

In math, the students are transitioning into their second units; chapter two in the Nelson Texts.

You may have noticed that there are no tests and assignments sent home....At this age they often get

"Lost"...Please watch for marks to be signed in their agendas.  If you'd like to see their tests and assignments I'd be happy to send home a photocopy.

Students simply log-on to Homework Help at http://homeworkhelp.ilc.org and using an interactive chat room, can obtain personalized tutoring from a certified Ontario math teacher from the participating boards. Welcome to Mr.Panagiotou's 6/7 class.

    We have finished re-organizing the school and we'll endeavor to quickly get your

sons and daughters into learning routines which will allow them to flourish.

Thus far your children have not received a great deal of homework.  I'd like to remind

everyone that the expectation at this time is 4.5 hours / week minimum.  I'm not a huge fan

of weekend homework and I'll try to keep the homework routine as Monday to Thursday with the

exception of major assignments and tests.

    Parents: You should have received a number of handouts from your kids recently such as:

1) a calendar of the year's events and PD days, (2) picture day notice, (3) a personal inform / freedom

of information forms and (4) a student bio form.

Thanks so much for filling in the bio forms.  It gave me a great deal of information which will hopefully help me instruct your son or daughter to the best of their abilities.

    As far as regular homework, your kids will receive weekly spelling lists and assignments followed by a Friday dictation.  Math will generally be every night unless they are a very fast worker. 

Once next week begins there is no such thing as "NO HOMEWORK" from Monday to Thursday.

Your kids should get into a homework routine which could include nightly reading, practicing times tables, or reviewing notes for rotary subjects such as geography, history, or science.

    Once next week begins, I will post upcoming homework at least twice a week.  Your children should be using their day planners to organize themselves but this blog will be a good back up tool, especially for parents.

Do Not Forget!

Monday, May 2nd is a crazy day... AM-Band to Dufferin Arts Festival   PM-6/7P swimming in Fergus -bring extra clothes

Our 4th swimming session is Monday, May 3rd in the afternoon.  This session will be our survival swim session. Students are asked to bring closed toe shoes, long pants, and long sleeved shirts which they will wear in the water (to simulate a real accident).  Students are asked to wear their bathing suites underneath these items as the survival session will not take the entire class.  An extra plastic bag would also be beneficial.

Dufferin Arts Festival:

The band members from 6/7P will be performing at the Dufferin Festival of the Arts on the morning of Monday, May 3rd, 2010.  Please remember your instruments.  Don't worry...you'll be back in time for swimming.
